Weekend Update: March 8th-10th

Check out this list of local events for something fun to do this weekend!

Friday, March 8^th – Lewes Lunch & Learn
Lewes Lunch & Learns are hosted by the Lewes Historical Society at the Midway School House #178 on the Lewes Historic Complex (110 Shipcarpenter Street) at noon for 20-30 minutes, followed by a question and answer period. The second event is this Friday from 12pm-1pm. Carl Hunt will present “Five Centuries of Information Technology, The First Town of the First State at the Cutting Edge.” Audience members are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch, and the Lewes Historical Society will provide soft drinks. Friday, March 8^th – Mid-Atlantic Wine & Food Festival
The Mid-Atlantic Wine & Food Festival is taking place all weekend (it started today, actually!) all over the state. There are 44 events in all, supporting the Rehoboth Beach Film Society and eight other arts organizations throughout Delaware. One, local event is Bourbon + Bacon: South from 5pm-7pm on Friday at local favorite, Nage (19730 Coastal Highway) in Rehoboth Beach. Saturday, March 9^th – Big Fish Grill Cooking Class
Cooking classes at this local favorite include hands-on participation, a meet & greet with the chef, wine and cheese tasting, wine pairing, and several courses of instruction. Saturday, March 9^th – Rehoboth Art League Young at Art Exhibition
The Rehoboth Art League (12 Dodds Lane) will display artwork from students in both public and private local schools. The opening reception is from 10am-1pm this Saturday and the show runs through March 23^rd. Support young, local artists and check it out!

Sunday, March 10^th – St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Irish Eyes Pub & Bar will host the Annual Milton St. Patrick’s Day Parade this Sunday in downtown Milton. The parade kicks off at 2pm. This year there is also a Lucky Leprechaun 5K Run/Walk to benefit the Milton Chamber prior to the race. Registration begins at 11am and the race starts at noon. Weekend Update – February 8th-10th

Here are a few events to consider for this weekend:

Friday, Feb. 8^th – Go Red For Women 2013
Help the American Heart Association fight heart disease in women by supporting this annual event. The Southern Delaware “Go Red” event takes place at the Sheraton Dover Hotel (1570 N. DuPont Highway in Dover) this year. Tickets are $35 each and include lunch, entertainment, gift bag, $10 gift card from Macy’s, and extensive health screenings. There will also be a silent auction. Saturday, Feb. 9^th – Lewes Winter Fest Barkfest Pet Pagaent
This 7^th Annual event takes place in downtown, historic Lewes (around Second Street). Bank Street is renamed Bark Street for the event and pets of all kinds can strut their stuff. Categories include formal wear, leisure wear, companion look-alike, and kids freestyle. You can pre-register your pet at P.U.P.S. (Pawsitively Unique Pet Shop) at 117 Second Street or register the day of in front of Citizens Bank from between noon-1:30pm. Each entry is $5 and the money benefits the Georgetown SPCA. Saturday, Feb. 9^th – Savory Sussex
This program, sponsored by the Zwaanendael Museum, highlights the “unique and delectable local flavors of Sussex County.” This event is free and takes place at the Zwaanendael Museum at 2pm on Saturday.

Friday, January 18^th – Classic Casino Night
Join the Dunes Pink Classic for their James Bond Style Classic Casino Night at The Cove at Bayside Resort (31806 Lakeview Drive in Selbyville) from 7pm-11pm. Tickets are $40 in advance or $45 at the door. High Roller Table tickets are available in limited quantities for $100 each. All Weekend – Rehoboth Beach Film Society “What Makes Us Tick” Series
The “What Makes Us Tick” is an annual, three-part film series that includes post-screening discussions led by professional mental health practitioners. This year’s theme is “Families Taking the Gloves Off: From Conflict to Understanding.” And the films were selected to demonstrate families facing multiple challenges, with post-screening discussions including topics such as sibling rivalry, parent-child conflict, bullying, ethical dilemmas, and dealing with issues such as illness and death. All films will be screened at the Swan Ballroom in the Atlantic Sands Hotel (100 N. Boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach) and tickets are $13 per film and $36 for the three-film package. Screenings are of The Savages on Friday, the 18^th at 7pm, In A Better World on Saturday, the 19^th at 2pm, and Pieces of April on Sunday, the 20^th at 2pm. Weekend Update: December 28th-30th

The last weekend of 2012 is a slow one in the area. Everyone is gearing up for New Years Parties! However, if you’re looking for something to do, check out the Holiday Family Program at Cape Henlopen State Park. Thursday, Friday & Saturday at 11am the park staff will show what makes a fish a fish. There is a fee of $2 per person. Pre-registration is required. You can pre-register by calling 302-645-6852. At 2pm Thursday, Friday & Saturday a naturalist will present cool fish facts during a fish feeding at the Seaside Nature Center. The Nature Center is also open for touring from 9pm-4pm and the borrow a bike program is available from 9am-3pm all weekend, weather permitting.

The Holiday Art Show & Sale kicks off the holiday season in Lewes on Friday, 11/30 from 6pm-9pm with an opening reception for the Holiday Art Show & Sale that will continue all weekend. Saturday, December 1^st: Lewes Historical Society House Tour
One of the most popular holiday traditions in Lewes is back this Saturday from 10am-4pm. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the day of the event. All proceeds benefit the Lewes Historical Society. This year 8 private homes and the Society’s museums will be decorated and open to the public. The Christmas Antiques Bazaar & Bake Sale will be going on simultaneously at the Rabbit’s Ferry House (3^rd & Shipcarpenter St.) in the Lewes Historical Complex. Saturday, December 1^st: Lewes Hometown Christmas Parade, Tree Lighting & Caroling
The theme for this year’s Christmas Parade is “Let It Snow!!!” This great Lewes tradition is from 5pm-7pm. It begins on Savannah Road at Sussex Drive and ends in front of King’s Ice Cream Shop on Second Street. The parade includes floats, marching bands, cards, dogs, and many other participants. The rain/snow date for the parade is Sunday, December 2^nd at the same time.

Weekend Update, 11/23-11/25

This holiday weekend will, of course, be filled with shopping for many, but if you’re looking for something different to keep you busy, consider checking out Clear Space Theatre’s presentation of “A Christmas Carol!” which is opening this weekend. The Baltimore Sun called the Ritz Chamber Players “one of the most interesting and dynamic ensembles to emerge in recent years.” Currently in their 11^th year of performing the Ritz players have performed with the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, London Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, and more. This will be the ensembles first appearance in Lewes. The concert will take place at Bethel United Methodist Church from 8pm-10pm. Tickets are $25. The Rehoboth Beach Village Improvement Association is holding this annual tea party and banquet on Friday & Saturday at the Rehoboth Beach Fire House. Seatings are at 11am and 2pm both days. Weekend Update: Nov. 2nd-4th

Don’t forget about Daylight Savings… this is the weekend we turn our clocks back an hour! If your weekend plans don’t include cleaning up from Hurricane Sandy, there is really only one event worth mentioning this weekend:

World Championship Punkin Chunkin!

This local favorite has turned into a famous event that even has its own television show! Punkin Chunkin brings people from all over to Bridgeville, Delaware! This year’s festival is all weekend with gates opening to the public at 7:30am each morning (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). Tickets are $10 per day and parking is free except for oversized vehicles and/or trailers. Children under 10 are admitted free. The festival atmosphere includes vendors of many kinds and is fun for the whole family. A cooking contest/chili cook-off and Mr. & Mrs. Punkin Chunkin Pageant are also part of the festivities. For more information and a detailed schedule of events check out this link. Keep in mind that adjustments may be made because of the storm, but as far as I can tell the event is still on. Of course, if you miss out, you can always watch the televised version on Thanksgiving Night at 8pm on the Discovery Channel.

Lots of Halloween events going on at the beach this weekend!

All Weekend: 23^rd Annual Sea Witch Halloween & Fiddlers’ Festival
This spooky annual event kicks off its 23^rd year on Friday, October 26^th. The heart of this event is in downtown Rehoboth beach, although it overflows into Dewey Beach and on to Coastal Highway. This year’s theme is Sea Witch is Smokin’ and there are events for all ages. There will be a Tykes on Bikes parade on Friday, Costume Parade on Saturday, Sea Witch Hunt, Broom Tossing Contest, Make Your Own Scarecrow, Trick or Treating for kids, Fiddlers’ Festival, Magic Shows and much, much more!!! All Weekend: Children’s Fantasy Trail in Lewes
This 24^th annual event will be held at the Nature Center in Cape Henlopen State Park. Children are encouraged to wear their costumes and trick-or-treat on the trail. Cost is $5 per person and the trail is open from 6-8:30pm on Friday and Saturday and 6-7:30pm on Sunday. After the trail families may enjoy entertainment the includes magicians, sing-alongs, juggling and more. There will be refreshments for sale as well. This event benefits the Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park.

Saturday, October 27^th: Wags, Witches, and Warlocks
This 2^nd annual Halloween Festival includes a costume contests, pumpkin decorating, trick or treating, hay rides, crafts, music, and more. The parade begins at 10am and the rain date is Sunday, October 28^th. For more information, check out this link.

The Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park are hosting their 7^th annual Wine, Cheese, and Beer Tasting from 4pm-6pm on Saturday. Admission is $20 in advance or $24 at the door and of course you must have proper identification. Your ticket also covers your park entrance free. Sunday, October 21^st – Delaware Wine & Beer Festival

I can’t believe it’s already October! If you love to shop, this weekend is a great one for you, but there are also a couple of great festivals happening. There’s tons going on this weekend, so check it out:

Friday, October 5^th – Lewes Merchants’ Fall Sidewalk Sale
From 10am-5pm this Friday the merchants in the Historic Lewes Commercial District will be participating in the annual fall sidewalk sale. It’s worth checking out!

Saturday, October 6^th – Lewes Historical Society Craft Show
This annual craft show is well known for the quality of the over 80 Craftspeople in attendance. Admission is $5 at the door, and kids under 12 are free. The show is held at the Lewes Historic Complex (110 Shipcarpenter Street) and runs from 9am-4pm. The day also includes refreshments & live entertainment.

Saturday, October 6^th – Artisan Festival in Bethany Beach
There is also an arts festival in Bethany Beach this weekend. The event is hosted at the Bethany Beach Fire House (215 Hollywood Street) and features over 40 vendors displaying a variety of work including glass, metal, pottery, jewelry, fine art, and more. The Festival is from 9am-3pm and admission is free.

Saturday, October 6^th – Boast the Coast Maritime Festival & Lighted Boat Parade
Sponsored by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the University of Delaware College of Earth, Ocean & Environment, Boast the Coast is a fun festival that runs from 10am-dusk on Saturday. The festival includes seafood tasting, live entertainment, kids entertainment, free tours of the Cannonball House & Lightship Overfalls, and free boat tours. Saturday, October 6^th – Wings & Wheels Fall Festival in Georgetown
This 5^th annual event takes place at the Sussex County Airport in Georgetown. Over 20 vintage planes, which fly in and hundreds of cars will be at the show, which includes all day entertainment, food, games for kids, a living history program, and more. Admission is free for this unique festival. For more information check out this link.

All Weekend – 36^th Annual Fall Sidewalk Sale in Rehoboth & Dewey
The Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center sponsors this annual event that is going into its 36^th year! The sale runs from 9am-9pm Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, although some store hours may vary. Shopping is on downtown Rehoboth, downtown Dewey, and along Route One in between. Call the Chamber at 302-227-2233 for more information.

All Weekend – 50^th Annual Rehoboth Christmas Shop
Get your Christmas shopping started early with this annual event presented by two area churches. The shop is set up at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center (229 Rehoboth Ave.) and costs $1 for entry. Kids under 12 are free. Sale hours are 10am-6pm on Friday and Saturday and 11am-4pm Sunday. Items for sale include unique gifts, jewelry, clothing, gourmet food, holiday décor and more! This has been a Rehoboth tradition for many years, so definitely worth checking out! For more information call 302-227-7202.

This month’s film is a “freewheeling comedy” titled The Trip which stars Steve Coogan will be shows in the upstairs screening room at the Movies at Midway in Rehoboth Beach. For a complete review of the film (which sounds hilarious!) check out this link. Tickets are $4 for Film Society Members and $6 for everyone else.

Friday, September 21^st: Fun Friday! Oktoberfest
This Friday the Lewes Chamber of Commerce will sponsor their first annual Oktoberfest! This event will take place at Mary Vessels Park and on Market Street between Front Street and Second Street in Lewes from 4pm-8pm. Local merchants and vendors will be serving German good and German-themed merchandise and specials throughout the day. The festival will be all about live entertainment and family-fun and will include Bavarian dancers, an Oompah Band, and more!

Saturday, September 22^nd: Fall Beach Party in Dewey
On Saturday the Dewey Business Partnership will host their annual end of season beach party on the beach at Dagsworthy Street. This event is open to the general public and property owners in Dewey alike. Parking is free and the event runs from 5:30-9pm. Good and drinks from local business will be available at discounted prices and live entertainment includes Jimi Smooth and Bruce in the USA. This event is free to attend and is open to all ages.

Sunday, September 23^rd: Sampling of Sussex County
The Jefferson School in Georgetown will be hosting its 2^nd Annual Sampling of Sussex event from 12pm-3pm on Sunday. This family friendly event will include face painting, a petting zoo, live entertainment, and samplings from local restaurants. For more information and admissions costs call 302-856-3300.

Sunday, September 23^rd: Farmer & Foodie Festival
Stop by the Georgetown Circle from 12pm-4pm Sunday for the Farmer & Foodie Festival! This event celebrates and honors local farmers. There will carriage rides, pumpkin decorating, a backyard bbq competition, live entertainment, cooking demonstrations, and tastings from local businesses.

Sunday, September 23^rd: Free Concert in Cupola Park
Head to Cupola Park in Millsboro on Sunday evening to see local favorites “The Funsters” perform live. The concert begins at 5pm and is free for all! Don’t forget to bring a lawn chair or blanket! Picnic dinners are encouraged too.

Polkamotion By The Ocean

We’re taking a break from the Thursday Three this week to highlight a unique event happening at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center starting today and running through Sunday. Head down at some point to check out the 33^rd Annual Polkamotion By The Ocean! The last surviving “Beach” Polka Festival in the U.S.! Admission ranges from $10-$17 depending on your age and the day. Children 16 and under are always free! In addition to a line-up of “polka hall of famers” they will be serving a menu of delicious Polish foods and $1 beers all weekend. Each day of the festival has a theme, including Polka T-Shirt Night and Polka Dot Night. Festival hours are Thursday-6pm-12am, Friday-4pm-1am, Saturday-4pm-1am, and Sunday-11am-6:30pm. If you’ve never experienced polka before, this sounds like a fun event and the perfect opportunity to do so! You can always count on Rehoboth for something fun!

Weekend Update: September 14th-16th

Here are some fun events happening in and around our area this weekend:

Friday, 9/14 – Lightship Overfalls FallFest
The Overfalls Foundation will host its 4^th annual FallFest on the lightship grounds from 5pm-7pm Friday evening. The Overfalls is one of only 17 remaining lightships out of the 179 original ships built between 1820 and 1952. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark last year and is one of only seven in the country still open to the public. Saturday, 9/15 – Arts & Jazz Festival
The Freeman Stage at Bayside (31750 Lake View Drive in Selbyville) hosts this awesome event from 10am-6pm on Saturday. Some of Delmarva’s finest artists will have work displayed and talented jazz artists such as Joe Baione, Grace Kelly, Ron Carter and more will perform. For more information call 302-436-3015.

Saturday, 9/15 — Fenwick Flicks
The Bethany-Fenwick Chamber of Commerce hosts this final free family movie of the season at dusk on Saturday (approx. 8:30ish). The film this week is The Zookeeper and it will be played on the beach at Bayard Street in Fenwick Island. In case of inclement weather, the movie will be on Sunday evening.
