Spotlight on Taste of Italy in Rehoboth Beach & Lewes

Yesterday I suggested 5 mid-priced restaurants to try in Rehoboth. Today I want to turn the spotlight on a sixth. Touch of Italy offers specialty cheeses, meats, pasta, and pastries all made fresh. Their hero sandwiches are made to order and get rave reviews. In several places that I checked, Touch of Italy was the highest rated restaurant in Rehoboth Beach and if you’ve ever ordered one of their sandwiches, it’s easy to see why. The Rehoboth location (33A Baltimore Ave.) specializes in carry-out orders, but if you prefer table service you can try their Lewes location (101 2nd Street). Next time you’re in the mood for a delicious sandwich, be sure to check them out!

Thursday Three: 3 Awesome Local Farmers Markets

Who doesn’t love fresh, locally produced fruits and veggies? We are lucky enough to have several local farmers markets worth checking out, and since they’re open different days of the week, you can have fresh food all summer long! Here are three to check out:

Historic Lewes Farmers Market – 110 Shipcarpenter Street
Open every Saturday through the end of September. 8am-12pm. No pets allowed. Vendors sell everything, including fresh beef & pork, homemade jellies and jams, fruits, veggies, organic baked goods, gourmet cheeses, and more! For a full list of vendors, check out this list.

Rehoboth Beach Farmers Market – Next to the Rehoboth Beach Chamber of Commerce (501 Rehoboth Ave.)
Open every Tuesday from noon-4pm. In addition to the usual farmers market vendors you can also enjoy chef’s demos! Check out the website for lots of info, suggested recipes, and a weekly newsletter.

Milton Farmers Market – Downtown Historic Milton… you can’t miss it!
Open every Friday from 3:30pm-6:30pm through the end of October. This farmers market is only in its second year, but it’s already become a local staple! You can friend this market on Facebook for updates and more info!

All Weekend – The Delaware State Fair
The Delaware State Fair begins Thursday, July 19^th and runs through Saturday, July 28^thin Harrington. All of your favorite animals, rides, and foods are back! There’s way too much going on at the fair for me to list here, so check out the website for more info! Some highlights for the weekend include racing pigs, Circus Hollywood, Lego Building Contest, and concerts by Casting Crowns, Sugarland, Cheap Trick & Styx.

All Weekend – The Firefly Music Festival
If music is your thing, head into Dover for the 3-day Firefly Music Festival. All three-day tickets are sold out, but single-day tickets are still available for each day. The lineup includes The Killers, The Black Keys, Jack White, Death Cab For Cutie, John Legend, and more. In addition to music, food, drink, and other attractions are a key part of this festival! There’s a lot going on in Sussex County this weekend! Here are a few highlights:
Thursday, July 13th-Saturday, July 14th – Nanticoke Riverfest
The theme for the this 18th annual festival hosted by the city of Seaford is “Having a ball on the Nanticoke!” This festival highlights the Nanticoke River, takes place throughout downtown Seaford, and offers fun and excitement for all ages! Highlights of this event include live entertainment, the Duck Dash, carnival rides, a motorcycle & car show, canoe races, and competition events including: cornhole, duck calling, tractor pull, and for the kids, coloring! Of course, the biggest event is the float-in on Saturday afternoon when literally hundreds of people float down the Nanticoke River in all kinds of crazy contraptions! Believe me, it’s a website worth checking out because there is way more detail then I could ever give you in a quick blurb. My best advice is to head to Seaford and check it out this weekend!

Saturday, July 14^th – Milton Garden & House Tour
Enjoy touring some of the most beautiful public and private gardens around, as well as gorgeous private homes that are open for viewing. The variety will astound you! As the name implies, this event takes place throughout Milton. It runs from 10am-4pm, and you must have a ticket. For tickets or more information, call the Milton Garden Club at 302-684-3804.

Saturday, July 14^th – Lewes Summer Craft Fair
Enjoy high-quality craftsmanship while contributing to raise funds for the Lewes Historical Society. Over 80 vendors will display a variety of arts & crafts. Live music, food, and fun will round out the day! The show runs from 9am-4pm at the Lewes Historical Society Complex (110 Shipcarpenter Street). Cost is $5 per visitor, kids under 12 are free.

Sunday, July 15^th – Breakfast At The Firehouse
If you haven’t enjoyed breakfast at the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company yet this season you have another chance to do so! This delicious, all you can eat breakfast is hosted at the firehouse in Bethany Beach (215 Hollywood Street). Enjoy a tour of the firehouse plus an all you can eat feast of eggs, French toast, biscuits and gravy, potatoes, muffins, bacon, sausage, juice, and coffee. There are also special activities to keep the kids busy. Breakfast is $10 for adults and $5 for children over 5 and free for kids ages 5 and under. 8am-11am.

Of course, if you’re still looking for something to do, you can always head to the bandstand in Rehoboth. Performers this weekend include Another Level, the MD Army National Guard Live Fire Band, and Jamie McLean. All shows are free and begin at 8pm.

Saturday, July 7^th – St. Peter’s 46^th Sidewalk Art & Artisan Show
Enjoy fine arts and crafts in beautiful downtown Lewes. Over 140 artists will be exhibiting their work from 9am-4pm on Second Street in Lewes.

Saturday, July 7^th – Doktor Kaboom’s Interactive Science Comedy Show

Then, from 5pm-7pm join in (or watch!) the Infamous Lewes Doo-Dah Parade! With no need to register or plan ahead, you can just jump in any time to become part of this fun, family activity!

Bethany Beach 4^th of July Parade and Fireworks
Gather in downtown Bethany beginning at noon for festive day of fun! Activities include a horseshoe throwing contest, blueberry pie eating contest, live music, fireworks, and more. For more information call 302-539-8011.

Laurel’s 18^th Annual July 4^th Celebration

The weekend will include more than 40 sea glass artists, other artists from all over the U.S., collectors, guest speakers, and more. Hours are 9am-4pm Saturday and 9am-3pm Sunday. Sunday, June 24^th – Heritage Shores Car Show
Head down to Heritage Shores Golf Club in Bridgeville for the 2^nd Annual Car Show from 11am-2pm. The afternoon will include food as well as fun and all kinds of cars! Sunday, June 24^th – Fish ‘n Kids
Lewes Canalfront Park will host this event sponsored by Quest Fitness & Kayak once again this year. Stop by the Lewes Life-Saving Station and watch participants build 12 foot wooden boats called “Bevin Skiffs.” These fishing and recreational boats fit 4 people comfortably and are made on site. Saturday from 10am-4pm you can view the 16 boats and Sunday at approximately 1pm you can enjoy the launching of the ships at Lewes Canalfront Park.

The band is made up entirely of active-duty military members and they incorporate the story of the air force into a kid-friendly performance! All ages are welcome, but this show is geared toward the kids. The concert is free. Located at the Freeman Stage at Bayside (31750 Lake view Drive in Selbyville). Saturday, 6/16 – 22^nd Annual Lewes Garden Tour
This popular annual event is hosted by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce. Enjoy this beautiful self-guided tour from 10am-4pm on Saturday. There are ten gardens on the tour this year, 1 public and 9 private. In addition to touring the gardens you are also welcome to enjoy the garden market, food tent and working artists. At 1pm there will be a lecture entitled “Using Flower Essence of Life’s Stresses – The Power of Flowers” in Zwaanendael Park. Tickets are $15 in advance of $20 on Saturday. You can purchase tickets in advance by visiting the Lewes Chamber of Commerce (120 Kings Highway in the Fisher-Martin House).

Sunday, 6/17 – 14^th Annual Chautauqua Tent Performances
You can enjoy this year’s performances from 1pm-8pm in Zwaanendael Park. This year’s theme is The War of 1812. This year’s performers include a story-teller, musicians, a food demonstrator, a historian, and a theatrical reenactor. Non-military families are welcome to come to Canalfront Park at 1:30pm to show their support during the Welcome Ceremony which will include a musical tribute and Air Force Flyover. All tours depart from the pier behind the Ferry Terminal in Lewes at 11am. Reservations are required and participants must arrive at least 15 minutes early. Cost is $35/ages 13+. Sunday, June 3^rd – Picnic in the Park
This fun event takes place from 12pm-3pm at Canalfront Park in Lewes. Admission is $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Kids under 12 are $5. Food & beverage tickets are $2 each. Memorial Day – Thank You

Thank you to all the men and women who have served or are currently serving in our country’s armed forces. It is because of your service that we are able to enjoy the freedoms we have as Americans. We appreciate your service and your sacrifice.

If you’re looking for a way to honor those who have served, there are two local Memorial Day Ceremonies taking place on Wednesday (5/30). One will be conducted by VFW Post 7447 at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand at 11am. Another will be hosted by the American Legion Post in Lewes at their Outdoor Pavilion also at 11am. The Lewes Summer Concert Series kicks off this Tuesday (May 29th) at 7pm. This series takes place in beautiful Stango Park on Kings Highway next to the Lewes Public Library and features free outdoor concerts every Tuesday evening as well as additional times throughout the summer. Saturday, May 26^th: Horseshoe Crab & Shorebird Festival
This popular event is hosted by the Milton Chamber of Commerce and takes place at Milton Memorial Park & Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge. Join the 1500+ other people who enjoy this annual festival and enjoy an art show, crafts, boat rides, canoe trips, games, food, music, trail walks, train rides, a scavenger hunt, and more! A shuttle bus is available to take guests from the park to the refuge and back. 10am-4pm

Saturday, May 26^th: Historic Lewes Farmers Market
The Historic Lewes Farmers Market opens this weekend for another season! Located at the Lewes Historical Society Complex (110 Shipcarpenter Street), the HLFM offers the freshest local foods available in an educational, community-oriented, family-friendly setting! Support local farmers every Saturday starting this weekend and running through the end of September. 8am-12pm every Saturday from May 26-September 29, 2012.

Saturday, May 26^th-Sunday, May 27^th: Seaford’s Heritage Weekend
This 5^th Annual event is held at the Governor Ross Plantation all weekend. It features a living history encampment, demonstrators, crafts & exhibits. Living history artisans will demonstrate period crafts and re-enactors will participate in demonstrations. In addition, there will be live music and entertainment. Sunday, May 27^th: Lantern Tours of Fort Miles
Historic Fort Miles, located in Cape Henlopen State Park was an important defense position during World War 2. This weekend you have the opportunity to tour the gun battery by lantern light and learn about how soldiers defended the U.S. coast. There is a limit of 30 for this tour and pre-registration is required. Cost is $5 per person, and it is for ages 10 and up only. Call 302-645-6852 to register or get more information.

Sunday, May 27^th: Concerts in Cupola Park
Head down to Cupola Park in Millsboro from 6pm-8pm for a free outdoor concert sponsored by Thoro-Good’s Concrete. This week’s performers are “The Funsters,” a ten-piece band that has been performing together for over 12 years! Performing a wide variety of pieces from Frank Sinatra to the Beatles to the Rolling Stones and more, this band has roots in Southern Delaware and enjoys playing to their home crowd!

All Weekend: Rehoboth & Dewey Beach 29^th Annual Sidewalk Sale
It’s a great weekend to find deals! Shop downtown Rehoboth Beach, downtown Dewey Beach & even Route One! Sales run from 10am-8pm (although some stores may have different hours), Friday 5/18-Sunday, 5/20.

Saturday, May 19^th: Kickoff to Summer Party at the Rehoboth Beach Museum
Music, food, a raffle, prizes and more! $25 for members, $35 for non-members. Reservations are required. 4pm-6pm

Saturday, May 19^th: Youth Fishing Tournament
7am-2pm; Rain date, Sunday, 5/20. Kids 15 and under are invited to participate in Cape Henlopen’s annual Youth Fishing Tournament. Cost is $10 per entrant and registration is at the fishing pier in Cape Henlopen State Park. The first 50 entrants get free t-shirts & prizes are awarded! Fishing was never my thing, but when we were kids, my brother and cousins always participated in this event and had a great time!

Saturday, May 19^th: Maritime Day Celebration
9am-4pm; National Maritime Day was first celebrated in 1933. Come celebrate it this year at the Lewes Ferry Terminal. Admission is free and the ferry bridge and engine room will be open for tours. There will also be art & maritime exhibits.

Most shops and restaurants in downtown, historic Lewes are taking part in this fun festival! Shops and business will feature special Italian-themed specials and restaurants will sell a wide variety of Italian favorites and specialties. Festa Italiana at the Zwaanendael Museum – 10am-4:30pm
A variety of activities and programs centered around Italian history will supplement the Italian Festival. Admission is free and all events are open to the public.

All Weekend – Little Shop of Horrors
Head into Rehoboth and take in a performance of Clear Space Theater’s Little Shop of Horrors. This classic pop-rock musical, based on a 1960’s film is a perennial favorite. Read a summary or purchase tickets here. Shows are at 7pm Friday and Saturday and 3pm Sunday. Tickets are $30 with discounted tickets available for seniors, children, and students. They also offer several different deals on tickets if you’re interested!

Some have called enjoying a meal at The Buttery “the ultimate culinary experience!” Located in historic Lewes, the inviting atmosphere of this restaurant almost requires you to bring Mom in for a rich and relaxing experience! Their brunch is ordered a la carte and is served with fresh fruit and pastries as well as a choice of champagne, mimosa, or bloody mary. Typically priced at $22.95/person, it is unclear on whether they will be making any adjustments especially for Mother’s Day.
