Saturday, June 23^rd – CHEER Classic International Car Show
This event showcases classic cars from all over the world to raise funds for Meals On Wheels. This year’s event will include world famous racer Mario Andretti’s Indy Car. The event takes place at the CHEER Community Center (20520 Sand Hill Road in Georgetown). Tickets are just $5 for anyone ages 10 and up. Hours are from 10am-2pm. Saturday, June 23^rd-Sunday, June 24^th – 2012 Mid-Atlantic Sea Glass & Coastal Arts Festival
Head down to the Lewes Historical Society Complex (110 Shipcarpenter Street) and for just $5 you can buy a pass good for both days of this unique festival. The weekend will include more than 40 sea glass artists, other artists from all over the U.S., collectors, guest speakers, and more. Hours are 9am-4pm Saturday and 9am-3pm Sunday. Sunday, June 24^th – Heritage Shores Car Show
Head down to Heritage Shores Golf Club in Bridgeville for the 2^nd Annual Car Show from 11am-2pm. The afternoon will include food as well as fun and all kinds of cars! Sunday, June 24^th – Fish ‘n Kids
Lewes Canalfront Park will host this event sponsored by Quest Fitness & Kayak once again this year. There will be fishing games and activities geared toward kids ages 3-12, including the chance for kids to make their own fishing poles! If you bring a t-shirt kids can even make their own fish-embossed t-shirts. This event runs from 12pm-2pm and admission is free!

This annual event takes place on the beach at Dagsworthy Street from 11am-2pm on Tuesday with registration beginning at 10am. 30 teams from some of your favorite local restaurants will take place in fun competitions including kayak racing, tray carrying, and an obstacle course. Last year’s champion was Jake’s Seafood House with The Cultured Pearl and The Lighthouse rounding out the podium. Which local eatery will be this year’s champion? In case of rain this event will take place on Thursday, 6/21 at the same time. Come out and cheer on your favorite!

Wednesday, 6/20: Bonfire on the Beach
Dewey kicks off their weekly Wednesday Night bonfire this week on the beach at Dagsworthy Street. Bonfires will take place every Wednesday (except July 4^th) through the end of August. Bonfires are from 7:30pm-11pm and are weather dependent. In case of inclement weather, cancellations will be announced no later than 6pm. Bring some beach chairs and some marshmallows to roast (you might want to throw some graham crackers and chocolate bars into your bag too!) and enjoy some summer fun with the whole family!

A shuttle bus is available to take guests from the park to the refuge and back. 10am-4pm

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market opens this weekend for another season! Located at the Lewes Historical Society Complex (110 Shipcarpenter Street), the HLFM offers the freshest local foods available in an educational, community-oriented, family-friendly setting! Support local farmers every Saturday starting this weekend and running through the end of September. 8am-12pm every Saturday from May 26-September 29, 2012.

This 5^th Annual event is held at the Governor Ross Plantation all weekend. It features a living history encampment, demonstrators, crafts & exhibits. Living history artisans will demonstrate period crafts and re-enactors will participate in demonstrations. In addition, there will be live music and entertainment. Sunday, May 27^th: Lantern Tours of Fort Miles
Historic Fort Miles, located in Cape Henlopen State Park was an important defense position during World War 2. This weekend you have the opportunity to tour the gun battery by lantern light and learn about how soldiers defended the U.S. coast. There is a limit of 30 for this tour and pre-registration is required. Cost is $5 per person, and it is for ages 10 and up only. Call 302-645-6852 to register or get more information.

Sunday, May 27^th: Concerts in Cupola Park
Head down to Cupola Park in Millsboro from 6pm-8pm for a free outdoor concert sponsored by Thoro-Good’s Concrete. This week’s performers are “The Funsters,” a ten-piece band that has been performing together for over 12 years! Performing a wide variety of pieces from Frank Sinatra to the Beatles to the Rolling Stones and more, this band has roots in Southern Delaware and enjoys playing to their home crowd!

Spotlight on Big Fish Grill, Rehoboth Beach

Looking to try some place new for dinner tonight? Try Big Fish Grill in Rehoboth! This casual dining restaurant is great for families, business lunches, hanging out with friends, or, if you sit in one of the high-backed booths even a private date!

The food is well-prepared and delicious! Their daily specials demonstrate their underlying commitment to freshness, and the service is great too! They even offer special carry-out deals, if that’s more your speed. Everything I’ve ever had at Big Fish Grill has been great, but I especially like the Lobster Bisque & Grilled Salmon.

One last thing I really like about Big Fish Grill is that they offer cooking classes! The classes don’t run during the summer since it’s their busiest season, but they’ll begin again in October, so check back then!

Saturday, May 19^th: Kickoff to Summer Party at the Rehoboth Beach Museum

Saturday, May 19^th: Youth Fishing Tournament
7am-2pm; Rain date, Sunday, 5/20. Kids 15 and under are invited to participate in Cape Henlopen’s annual Youth Fishing Tournament. Cost is $10 per entrant and registration is at the fishing pier in Cape Henlopen State Park. The first 50 entrants get free t-shirts & prizes are awarded! Fishing was never my thing, but when we were kids, my brother and cousins always participated in this event and had a great time!

Saturday, May 19^th: Maritime Day Celebration
9am-4pm; National Maritime Day was first celebrated in 1933. Come celebrate it this year at the Lewes Ferry Terminal. Admission is free and the ferry bridge and engine room will be open for tours. There will also be art & maritime exhibits.

Head into Rehoboth and take in a performance of Clear Space Theater’s Little Shop of Horrors. This classic pop-rock musical, based on a 1960’s film is a perennial favorite. Read a summary or purchase tickets here. Shows are at 7pm Friday and Saturday and 3pm Sunday. Tickets are $30 with discounted tickets available for seniors, children, and students. Delaware has its own geocaching trail that includes 75 locations statewide, with many in Sussex County, including a couple in Cape Henlopen State Park! If you love being outdoors, surrounded by the beauty of nature then you should try geocaching.

Have you heard of geocaching? Geocaching is basically a big outdoor treasure hunt! Participants use a GPS or other navigational techniques to locate small boxes called “caches” and hide other caches. Currently there are over 5 million geocachers in the world with caches in over 100 countries and on all seven continents. Delaware has its own geocaching trail that includes 75 locations statewide, with many in Sussex County, including a couple in Cape Henlopen State Park! Spotlight on Fort Miles

Fort Miles is/will be receiving a lot of attention in the coming days because a relic from World War II is currently making its way toward Fort Miles. The 16 inch gun headed to Cape Henlopen was part of the heavy weaponry on the battleship USS Missouri.

Fort Miles was a key piece of our nation’s coastal defense during World War II, and it is located in what is now Cape Henlopen State Park. Fort Miles is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a great place to learn about the role of the Delaware shore during World War II. Fort Miles is/will be receiving a lot of attention in the coming days because a relic from World War II is currently making its way toward Fort Miles. The 16 inch gun headed to Cape Henlopen was part of the heavy weaponry on the battleship USS Missouri. Although this exact gun was never at Fort Miles, it is similar to the two Army guns housed there, ready to defend the coastline should the need arise. The gun is 66 feet long, weights a quarter of a million pounds, and could shoot a 1-ton shell around 23 miles! This massive gun is set to arrive in Georgetown on Monday, April 16^th and make its way to Cape Henlopen from there. Nobody is exactly sure when the gun will arrive at Fort Miles, but in the meantime you can take a tour or participate in the interpretive program at Fort Miles. The Orientation Building is open from 10am-4pm on Tuesday-Saturday.

Summer Camps for Kids, Part 2

Now that it’s mid-April, if there are kids in your life that need/want to go to summer camp, you shouldn’t wait much longer to register. Spots at the best camps fill up quickly! Here are a few other great area camps I came across while researching for last week’s 5 Great Summer Camps at the Beach post. Check them out and get registered!

Music School of DE in Milford
With branches in Milford and Wilmington, the Music School of Delaware offers several summer programs for children of all ages and even adults!

Delaware Technical Community College in Georgetown
Del Tech is not just for adults. This college also offers camps for kids from ages 5-15 on all of its campuses. Summer sessions run from June 18^th-August 17^th and there is a wide variety to choose from. There are sessions for academics, art, career exploration, culinary arts, enrichment, the environment, science, sports & fitness, and technology. No matter what your kids are interested there is sure to be a program to interest them, everything from “Learn How to Draw Superheroes” to “Renewable Energy Camp” to “Create Your Own Video Game” and a ton of other options! Cost depends on the type of camp and whether you choose half day or full day sessions. You can even mix and match camps to create a full summer of fun! Scholarships are available.

Sussex Family YMCA Day Camps
The YMCA is known for its quality childcare, and their outdoor summer camps offer fun for kids from ages 2.5-15 years old. Camps at the Sussex Family YMCA in Rehoboth Beach run in one week sessions from May 29-August 24 with each week offering a different, age appropriate theme. Older kids even get to walk to the beach! There are also separate sports camps. Cost ranges from $98-$180 depending on the age of the child and the theme of the camp. Financial assistance is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Trap Pond State Park Camp in Laurel
Trap Pond State Park offers 4 different “Discovery Camp” sessions from July 16-August 10. These week long camp sessions are geared for ages 8-12 and run from 9am-4pm each day. Activities include hiking, biking, games, fishing, boating, nature study, and crafts. Cost is $160 per week.

Saturday, April 14^th: Annual Flea Market at Cape Henlopen State Park
This flea market takes place at the Seaside Nature Center in Cape Henlopen State Park from 9am-3pm. If you have items to donate they may be donated at the Nature Center on Friday, 4/13 from 10am-1pm. There are some good deals to be had, so check it out! (In case of rain the flea market will be held in the Auditorium.)

Saturday, April 14^th: Kiwanis Club Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser
Support the Kiwanis Club as they raise money for local children’s charities. Enjoy all you can eat pancakes, sausage, coffee, tea, and orange juice at the Applebee’s in Rehoboth Beach (36501 Seaside Outlet Drive). Tickets are $6.

Saturday, April 14^th: The Atlantic Pearl Harbor
The Georgetown Public Library will be hosting a program called “The Atlantic Pearl Harbor: German U-Boats, Fort Miles and the Delaware Coastline” at 11am. Hear about Fort Miles in Lewes and the terror threat presented to the East Coast by German U-boats during World War II. This event is free and open to the public, but you must register by contacting the Georgetown Public Library (302-856-7958).
