Friday, 11/9 & Saturday, 11/10 – 7th Annual St. Nicholas Tea & Sleigh Boutique
The Rehoboth Beach Village Improvement Association is holding this annual tea party and banquet on Friday & Saturday at the Rehoboth Beach Fire House.  Seatings are at 11am and 2pm both days.  Cost is $25 for ages 14 and up and $15 for ages 13 and below.  For reservations, call Ann at 302-227-2416.  For more information, check out this link.

Get your holiday shopping on!  This event is sponsored by the Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park and is held at the Biden Center in the park from 9am-3pm on Saturday.  All proceeds benefit Cape Henlopen State Park, so get shopping!

World Championship Punkin Chunkin!

This local favorite has turned into a famous event that even has its own television show!  Punkin Chunkin brings people from all over to Bridgeville, Delaware!  This year’s festival is all weekend with gates opening to the public at 7:30am each morning (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday).  Tickets are $10 per day and parking is free except for oversized vehicles and/or trailers.  Children under 10 are admitted free.  The festival atmosphere includes vendors of many kinds and is fun for the whole family.  A cooking contest/chili cook-off and Mr. & Mrs. Punkin Chunkin Pageant are also part of the festivities.  For more information and a detailed schedule of events check out this link.  Keep in mind that adjustments may be made because of the storm, but as far as I can tell the event is still on.  Of course, if you miss out, you can always watch the televised version on Thanksgiving Night at 8pm on the Discovery Channel.

All Weekend: 23rd Annual Sea Witch Halloween & Fiddlers’ Festival
This spooky annual event kicks off its 23rd year on Friday, October 26th.  The heart of this event is in downtown Rehoboth beach, although it overflows into Dewey Beach and on to Coastal Highway.  This year’s theme is Sea Witch is Smokin’ and there are events for all ages.  There will be a Tykes on Bikes parade on Friday, Costume Parade on Saturday, Sea Witch Hunt, Broom Tossing Contest, Make Your Own Scarecrow, Trick or Treating for kids, Fiddlers’ Festival, Magic Shows and much, much more!!!  For more information, including a full schedule of events, check out this link.

All Weekend: Children’s Fantasy Trail in Lewes
This 24th annual event will be held at the Nature Center in Cape Henlopen State Park.  Children are encouraged to wear their costumes and trick-or-treat on the trail.  Cost is $5 per person and the trail is open from 6-8:30pm on Friday and Saturday and 6-7:30pm on Sunday.  After the trail families may enjoy entertainment the includes magicians, sing-alongs, juggling and more.  There will be refreshments for sale as well.  This event benefits the Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park.

Saturday, October 27th: Wags, Witches, and Warlocks
This 2nd annual Halloween Festival includes a costume contests, pumpkin decorating, trick or treating, hay rides, crafts, music, and more.  The parade begins at 10am and the rain date is Sunday, October 28th.  For more information, check out this link.

Saturday, October 20th  — Wine, Cheese & Beer Tasting
The Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park are hosting their 7th annual Wine, Cheese, and Beer Tasting from 4pm-6pm on Saturday.  Admission is $20 in advance or $24 at the door and of course you must have proper identification.  Your ticket also covers your park entrance free.  This event takes place at the Officer’s Club in Cape Henlopen State Park and all proceeds go to benefit the park.  For more information check out this link.

Sunday, October 21st – Delaware Wine & Beer Festival
This annual festival takes place in Felton, DE.  Local brews from locations around the state will be featured and tours of the Pizzadili Vineyard and Winery are available.  For more information or to purchase tickets, check out this link.

This major, annual event kicks off tomorrow and goes through the weekend.  With many great artists and a full schedule, there’s sure to be something for everyone!  This year features multiple stages and tickets are available at the door.  For more information and a full schedule events check out this link.

Friday, October 12th-Saturday, October 13th – Bridgeville Apple-Scrapple Festival

Friday, October 5th – Lewes Merchants’ Fall Sidewalk Sale
From 10am-5pm this Friday the merchants in the Historic Lewes Commercial District will be participating in the annual fall sidewalk sale.  It’s worth checking out!

Saturday, October 6th – Lewes Historical Society Craft Show
This annual craft show is well known for the quality of the over 80 Craftspeople in attendance.  Admission is $5 at the door, and kids under 12 are free.  The show is held at the Lewes Historic Complex (110 Shipcarpenter Street) and runs from 9am-4pm.  The day also includes refreshments & live entertainment.

Saturday, October 6th – Artisan Festival in Bethany Beach
There is also an arts festival in Bethany Beach this weekend.  The event is hosted at the Bethany Beach Fire House (215 Hollywood Street) and features over 40 vendors displaying a variety of work including glass, metal, pottery, jewelry, fine art, and more.  The Festival is from 9am-3pm and admission is free.

Saturday, October 6th – Boast the Coast Maritime Festival & Lighted Boat Parade
Sponsored by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the University of Delaware College of Earth, Ocean & Environment, Boast the Coast is a fun festival that runs from 10am-dusk on Saturday.  The festival includes seafood tasting, live entertainment, kids entertainment, free tours of the Cannonball House & Lightship Overfalls, and free boat tours.  The festival concludes with a lighted boat parade at dusk.  For more information, check out this link.

Saturday, October 6th – Wings & Wheels Fall Festival in Georgetown
This 5th annual event takes place at the Sussex County Airport in Georgetown.  Over 20 vintage planes, which fly in and hundreds of cars will be at the show, which includes all day entertainment, food, games for kids, a living history program, and more.  Admission is free for this unique festival.  For more information check out this link.

All Weekend – 36th Annual Fall Sidewalk Sale in Rehoboth & Dewey
The Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center sponsors this annual event that is going into its 36th year!  The sale runs from 9am-9pm Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, although some store hours may vary.  Shopping is on downtown Rehoboth, downtown Dewey, and along Route One in between.  Call the Chamber at 302-227-2233 for more information.

All Weekend – 50th Annual Rehoboth Christmas Shop
Get your Christmas shopping started early with this annual event presented by two area churches.  The shop is set up at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center (229 Rehoboth Ave.) and costs $1 for entry.  Kids under 12 are free.  Sale hours are 10am-6pm on Friday and Saturday and 11am-4pm Sunday.  Items for sale include unique gifts, jewelry, clothing, gourmet food, holiday décor and more!  This has been a Rehoboth tradition for many years, so definitely worth checking out!  For more information call 302-227-7202.

The summer season is over, and fall activities haven’t picked up quite yet, but if you’re looking for something new and interesting, check out the Rehoboth Film Society’s monthly screening on Friday, 9/28 at 7pm. This month’s film is a “freewheeling comedy” titled The Trip which stars Steve Coogan will be shows in the upstairs screening room at the Movies at Midway in Rehoboth Beach. For a complete review of the film (which sounds hilarious!) check out this link. Tickets are $4 for Film Society Members and $6 for everyone else.

Friday, September 21st: Fun Friday! Oktoberfest
This Friday the Lewes Chamber of Commerce will sponsor their first annual Oktoberfest!  This event will take place at Mary Vessels Park and on Market Street between Front Street and Second Street in Lewes from 4pm-8pm.  Local merchants and vendors will be serving German good and German-themed merchandise and specials throughout the day.  The festival will be all about live entertainment and family-fun and will include Bavarian dancers, an Oompah Band, and more! 

Saturday, September 22nd: Fall Beach Party in Dewey
On Saturday the Dewey Business Partnership will host their annual end of season beach party on the beach at Dagsworthy Street.  This event is open to the general public and property owners in Dewey alike.  Parking is free and the event runs from 5:30-9pm.  Good and drinks from local business will be available at discounted prices and live entertainment includes Jimi Smooth and Bruce in the USA.  This event is free to attend and is open to all ages.

Sunday, September 23rd: Sampling of Sussex County
The Jefferson School in Georgetown will be hosting its 2nd Annual Sampling of Sussex event from 12pm-3pm on Sunday.  This family friendly event will include face painting, a petting zoo, live entertainment, and samplings from local restaurants.  For more information and admissions costs call 302-856-3300.

Sunday, September 23rd: Farmer & Foodie Festival
Stop by the Georgetown Circle from 12pm-4pm Sunday for the Farmer & Foodie Festival!  This event celebrates and honors local farmers.  There will carriage rides, pumpkin decorating, a backyard bbq competition, live entertainment, cooking demonstrations, and tastings from local businesses.

Head to Cupola Park in Millsboro on Sunday evening to see local favorites “The Funsters” perform live.  The concert begins at 5pm and is free for all!  Don’t forget to bring a lawn chair or blanket!  Picnic dinners are encouraged too.

We’re taking a break from the Thursday Three this week to highlight a unique event happening at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center starting today and running through Sunday. Head down at some point to check out the 33rd Annual Polkamotion By The Ocean! The last surviving “Beach” Polka Festival in the U.S.! Admission ranges from $10-$17 depending on your age and the day. Children 16 and under are always free!

Friday, 9/14 – Lightship Overfalls FallFest
The Overfalls Foundation will host its 4th annual FallFest on the lightship grounds from 5pm-7pm Friday evening.  The Overfalls is one of only 17 remaining lightships out of the 179 original ships built between 1820 and 1952.  It was designated as a National Historic Landmark last year and is one of only seven in the country still open to the public.  This event celebrates the history of our very own landmark and is free to the public.  Everyone is asked to bring an appetizer to share.

Saturday, 9/15 – Arts & Jazz Festival
The Freeman Stage at Bayside (31750 Lake View Drive in Selbyville) hosts this awesome event from 10am-6pm on Saturday.  Some of Delmarva’s finest artists will have work displayed and talented jazz artists such as Joe Baione, Grace Kelly, Ron Carter and more will perform.  For more information call 302-436-3015.

Saturday, 9/15 — Fenwick Flicks
The Bethany-Fenwick Chamber of Commerce hosts this final free family movie of the season at dusk on Saturday (approx. 8:30ish).  The film this week is The Zookeeper and it will be played on the beach at Bayard Street in Fenwick Island.  In case of inclement weather, the movie will be on Sunday evening.  For more information call 302-539-2100.

Thursday, September 6th-Saturday, September 8th: Riverwalk Freedom Festival in Milford
This annual event in Milford begins with a 5K run/walk on Thursday, and continues  from 4pm-9pm on Friday with a “Park Party” at Bicentennial Park.  The “Park Party” is free and includes food, vendors, live entertainment, a boat parade, and fireworks at dusk.  The festival concludes on Saturday with events from 10am-4pm including a vendors, food, live entertainment, a car show, and more.  The annual Duck Dash will take place on Saturday with $350 in prizes up for grabs including $200 to the first place winner!  There will also be a Kids Korner with pony rides, inflatables, games, a petting zoo and more!  For more information check out this link.

Head down to the boardwalk in Bethany for a premier fine arts festival this weekend.  Featuring over 100 skilled artisans, this juried show attracts more than 7,500 visitors yearly.  The festival takes place from 10am-5pm on the boardwalk and surrounding streets, with a silent auction to benefit the art programs at four local elementary schools from 10am-4pm.  Participating artisans work in basketry, clay, drawing, fiber, glass, jewelry, metal, mixed media, painting, photography, wood, and more.

Saturday, September 8th – 7th Annual Chocolate Tasting in the Park
Head into Cape Henlopen State Park to sample all kinds of tasty chocolate treats!  The $5 admission includes 6 samples.  All the chocolate is homemade!  This delicious festival runs from 1pm-4pm.

Around the World Film Series in Rehoboth Beach

This week the Rehoboth Beach Film Society and Lewes Public Library kick off the 2012-2013 season of their critically acclaimed international independent film series. This season’s theme is Around the World, and it begins tomorrow night, September 5th in the upstairs screening room at Movies at Midway (Route 1 in Rehoboth).

This week the Rehoboth Beach Film Society and Lewes Public Library kick off the 2012-2013 season of their critically acclaimed international independent film series.  This season’s theme is Around the World, and it begins tomorrow night, September 5th in the upstairs screening room at Movies at Midway (Route 1 in Rehoboth).  The film kicking off this series is Hospitalite, a comedic film that won the Best Independent Debut Award at the Tokyo International Film Festival.  The film description states:  “This raucous comedy follows Mikio Kobayashi, who lives quietly with his wife, daughter, and divorced sister in downtown Tokyo, where the only recent excitement is the disappearance of a pet parrot.  But a stranger appears and stirs up the monotony of Mikio’s former life with affairs, blackmail, and rampant youthful partying.

The heroes of Bethany continue their summer tradition this weekend!  If you haven’t gone yet, you should try it…  This delicious, all you can eat breakfast is hosted at the firehouse in Bethany Beach (215 Hollywood Street).  Enjoy a tour of the firehouse plus an all you can eat feast of eggs, French toast, biscuits and gravy, potatoes, muffins, bacon, sausage, juice, and coffee.  There are also special activities to keep the kids busy.  Breakfast is $10 for adults and $5 for children over 5 and free for kids ages 5 and under. 8am-11am.  For more information call 302-539-7700.

Saturday, August 25th – Bargains on the Broadkill
This 23rd annual event in Historic Milton features arts, crafts, jewelry, good, and lots of other goodies.  The popular Great Duck Race offers cash prizes to the top 25 finishers with a grand prize of $500 and other prizes as well.  This event is sponsored by the Milton Chamber of Commerce.  The 10 mile Canoe & Kayak Race takes place simultaneously.  For more information, contact the Milton Chamber of Commerce at 302-684-1101.  There’s something for everybody on Saturday, so head down to Milton Memorial Park (Chandler Street) from 9am-3pm this Saturday and join the festivities!

Of course, if casual entertainment is your thing, the summer series at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand is your thing.  The series is winding down as we near the end of August, so if you haven’t been out yet, be sure to check out the bandstand this weekend!  Friday The Blue Tips Rhythm Revue will perform.  Blue Tips is a variety band with a 6 piece line-up and smokin’ brass section.  Saturday will be a concert by Sounds of Society which is a Chicago Tribute Band, and She Said Sunday will round out the weekend on Sunday.  She Said is a popular, award winning band that plays favorites from the 70’s through today.  All shows begin at 8pm and are totally free.

Thursday, 8/16: Cinema By The Surf
Take the family to the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand for a free showing of Happy Feet Two, sponsored by the Rehoboth Beach Film Society.  The movie is a fun, family film rated PG and runs for approximately 100 minutes.  Movie begins at dusk. 

Friday, 8/17-Sunday, 8/19:  Rehoboth Beach Bandstand
As usual, you can catch free concerts beginning at 8pm every weekend evening.  This weekend features Lower Case Blues, a blues group voted best band in Delaware Today’s “Best of Delaware 2009” on Friday, August 17th.  The perennial favorite US Army Field Band & Soldiers’ Chorus will perform on Saturday, August 18th.  A performance from NOMaD (North of Mason Dixon), an up and coming country band that has opened for some of the biggest names in the business (Toby Keith and Rascall Flatts, just to name two…) will round out the weekend with their performance on Sunday, August 19th.

If you didn’t get a chance to check it out last weekend, this weekend will conclude this annual festival.  This event features over 100 artists and artisans exhibiting fine arts and fine crafts.  Food, music, and entertainment for children are also scheduled.  This event is sponsored by the Rehoboth Art League and runs from 10am-5pm on Saturday and 10am-4pm on Sunday.

All Weekend: Big Thursday Festival in Millsboro
Millsboro’s annual Big Thursday Festival starts, of course, on Thursday, 8/9!  Thursday will be the President’s Auction at the Millsboro Fire Hall at 6pm.  Friday evening, 8/10 you can enjoy Elvins and The Mystery Train Band at Cupola Park at 5:30pm.  These events are followed up on Saturday August 11th with a full day of entertainment, food, vendors, and activities for the whole family.  Local favorites, The Funsters, will close out the festival on Saturday evening at 6pm.  For more information, contact the Millsboro Chamber of Commerce at 302-934-6777.

Saturday, August 11th: 39th Annual Outdoor Fine Art & Craft Show
The Rehoboth Art League (12 Dodds Lane) will host this long-time event that features over 100 artists and artisans exhibiting fine arts and fine crafts.  Food, music, and entertainment for children are also scheduled.  This event runs from 10am-5pm.  For more information contact the Rehoboth Art League.

Saturday, August 11th: Delaware Lighthouse Festival
Sponsored by the Delaware River & Bay Lighthouse Foundation, the first ever Delaware Lighthouse Festival will be held this Saturday at the Lewes Terminal of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry.  There will be tours of Delaware Breakwater East End Lighthouse as well as entertainment, food, family activities, canoe and kayak races, art, and more.  For those who are more interested in the history of lighthouses there will be lectures, experts, and talks with the descendants of local lighthouse keepers.  Parking and admission are both free!  For more information check out the event website.

Saturday, August 4th – Wyoming Peach Festival
If you’re up for a bit of a drive, head up to Wyoming, DE for the annual Wyoming Peach Festival.  This event takes place from 9am-3pm and includes crafters, live entertainment, food, orchard tours, and of course all things peach… peach ice cream, peach pie, peach nectar, and more!  Of course there are contests, and there’s even a special area just for kids!

Saturday, August 4th – 34th Annual Sandcastle Contest
The Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce hosts this annual event on Fisherman’s Beach in Rehoboth (at the North end of the boardwalk, by Henlopen Hotel).  With over 100 teams and 800 participants, checking out these amazing sandcastles is a must-do!  The contest is open to both adults and kids and registration begins at 8:30am.  There are categories for Adults (15 & older), Children 7-14 and Children 6 and under.  Sculpting can begin anytime after registration and judging takes place at 3pm.  Winners will be announced around 5pm and prizes will be awarded.  In addition to formal judging, there will also be people’s choice awards.

Saturday, August 4th – 7th Annual Beach Ball
Dinner, dancing, and both live and silent auctions are part of this benefit for the Rehoboth Beach historical Society.  Tickets start at $100 for members at $125 for non-members and it’s a great, local cause!  The ball will be held at Kings Creek Country Club (1 Kings Creek Circle) in Rehoboth.

Thursday, July 26th – Best of Delaware Party
Head up to Dover for a celebration of Delaware Today’s annual Best of Delaware issue.  The Best of Delaware Party is a fun event that celebrates the state’s favorites but also raises money for charity.  Year after year it continues to be super popular.  Tickets are $55 in advance or $70 at the door and the event takes place at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino (1131 North DuPont Hwy in Dover), so you can make a weekend of it!  The party is from 6pm-9pm, although you can purchase a ticket for the VIP preview party that begins at 5pm.  Tickets for the VIP party are $75 and must be purchased in advance.  There is an after party beginning at 9pm at Fire & Ice.  In addition to exhibitors from across the state, several local favorites will be represented including Abbott’s Grill, Baywood Greens, Candy Kitchen Shoppes, Dogfish Head Brewery, and Grotto Pizza!  To purchase tickets or for more info, check out this link.

Check out “The Funsters” in concert at the Community Center Lawn at the Villages of Five Points.  This is a free event.  The concert is from 7:30pm-9:30pm.

Friday, July 27th – A1A Jimmy Buffett Tribute Concert
A1A is the only Jimmy Buffett tribute band personally sanctioned by Jimmy Buffett himself!  Enjoy Buffett hits along with other summertime hits and some original music too.  Tickets are $10 and kids are free.  The concert is at the Freeman Stage at Bayside (31750 Lake View Drive in Selbyville) from 7pm-9pm.

Sunday, July 29th – Breakfast at the Bethany Beach Firehouse
The heroes of Bethany continue their summer tradition this weekend!  If you haven’t gone yet, you should try it…  This delicious, all you can eat breakfast is hosted at the firehouse in Bethany Beach (215 Hollywood Street).  Enjoy a tour of the firehouse plus an all you can eat feast of eggs, French toast, biscuits and gravy, potatoes, muffins, bacon, sausage, juice, and coffee.  There are also special activities to keep the kids busy.  Breakfast is $10 for adults and $5 for children over 5 and free for kids ages 5 and under. 8am-11am.

 

Of course, the bandstand at Rehoboth is always a great option for free weekend entertainment.  Performers this weekend include The City of Fairfax Band (Friday), the US Navy Sea Chanters Chorus (Saturday), and The Avalons (Sunday).  All shows are free and begin at 8pm.

Head into Lewes for a free concert at Canalfront Park.  The concert will feature the band Big Fat Slim & The Has Beens!  Concert begins at 6:30pm and is totally free!

All Weekend – The Delaware State Fair
The Delaware State Fair begins Thursday, July 19th and runs through Saturday, July 28th in Harrington.  All of your favorite animals, rides, and foods are back!  There’s way too much going on at the fair for me to list here, so check out the website for more info!  Some highlights for the weekend include racing pigs, Circus Hollywood, Lego Building Contest, and concerts by Casting Crowns, Sugarland, Cheap Trick & Styx.

All Weekend – The Firefly Music Festival
If music is your thing, head into Dover for the 3-day Firefly Music Festival.  All three-day tickets are sold out, but single-day tickets are still available for each day.  The lineup includes The Killers, The Black Keys, Jack White, Death Cab For Cutie, John Legend, and more.  In addition to music, food, drink, and other attractions are a key part of this festival!  Firefly partners with Illuminate Dover and St. Jude Kids to give back to the community.  For more information, a schedule of bands, or to buy tickets, check out the above link.

There’s a lot going on in Sussex County this weekend! Here are a few highlights:
Thursday, July 13th-Saturday, July 14th – Nanticoke Riverfest
The theme for the this 18th annual festival hosted by the city of Seaford is “Having a ball on the Nanticoke!” This festival highlights the Nanticoke River, takes place throughout downtown Seaford, and offers fun and excitement for all ages! Highlights of this event include live entertainment, the Duck Dash, carnival rides, a motorcycle & car show, canoe races, and competition events including: cornhole, duck calling, tractor pull, and for the kids, coloring! Of course, the biggest event is the float-in on Saturday afternoon when literally hundreds of people float down the Nanticoke River in all kinds of crazy contraptions! This is an event worth checking out for sure! For more information and a complete schedule of events, check out the official website (link above). Believe me, it’s a website worth checking out because there is way more detail then I could ever give you in a quick blurb. My best advice is to head to Seaford and check it out this weekend!

Saturday, July 14th – Milton Garden & House Tour
Enjoy touring some of the most beautiful public and private gardens around, as well as gorgeous private homes that are open for viewing.  The variety will astound you!  As the name implies, this event takes place throughout Milton.  It runs from 10am-4pm, and you must have a ticket.  For tickets or more information, call the Milton Garden Club at 302-684-3804.

Saturday, July 14th – Lewes Summer Craft Fair
Enjoy high-quality craftsmanship while contributing to raise funds for the Lewes Historical Society.  Over 80 vendors will display a variety of arts & crafts.  Live music, food, and fun will round out the day!  The show runs from 9am-4pm at the Lewes Historical Society Complex (110 Shipcarpenter Street).  Cost is $5 per visitor, kids under 12 are free.
