Weekend Update: March 29th-31st

This weekend is Easter weekend, and there are several great events going on in and around the area:

Friday, March 29th:  45th Annual Great Delaware Kite Festival
This fun, family event takes place on the Cape Henlopen State Park Parade Grounds from 10am-3pm Friday.  There is no entry fee to compete and competitions take place in three age groups.  Children (12 and under), Teens (13-17), and Adults (18 and up).  Each category presents awards for store-bought and home-made.  There are special class awards for Open Individual Ballet and Individual Precision, as well as awards for most senior flyer, youngest flyer, flyer furthest from home, smallest kite, and largest kite.  The Highest Kite Competition is open to everyone and takes place around 12:15pm.  There is no fee to watch, although entrance fees to Cape Henlopen do apply.  Competition begins at 10am, and there will be several vendors on site selling kites and supplies for those who wish to compete but do not have the necessary equipment.  Registration begins at 9am.  The Child and Teen competitions are in the morning, followed by the Highest Kite at 12:15 and then adult, individual ballet and individual precision competitions in the afternoon.

Friday, March 29th-Saturday, March 30th: Delaware Music Festival
Rusty Rudder (113 Dickinson Street) in Dewey Beach brings back its annual Delaware Music Festival this weekend.  Over the course of two evenings there will be 25 different bands on 4 different stages.  The event is free, but for ages 21 and up only.  Concerts start at 9pm Friday and 6pm Saturday.  For more information call 302-227-3888.

Saturday, March 30th:  First Annual Lewes Egg Hunt
Bring the whole family to Canalfront Park for Lewes’ 1st annual egg hunt!  The Easter Bunny will be there and thousands of eggs will be hidden.  In the event of rain, the hunt will take place indoors at the park building.  This event is recommended for children 10 and under.  Children must have a ticket to take place, and tickets are limited.  Cost is $5 for one ticket or $10 for 2 or more children in the same family.  To purchase tickets, go to lewescanalfrontpark.org.

Saturday, March 30th: 13th Annual Easter Egg Hunt in Georgetown
The annual Georgetown Egg Hunt is held at the Marvel Carriage Museum from 11am-1pm.  Admission is free and includes crafts, food, face painting, moon bounce, train rides, pictures with the Easter Bunny and more.  The egg hunt starts at noon.  For more information call 302-856-1544.

Saturday, March 30th: 5th Annual Alley Oop Egg Scoop
This year, Alley Oop Skim will host three separate egg hunts in Dewey Beach at New Orleans Street.  Ages 5 and under will hunt at 10am, ages 6-8 at 11am, and ages 9-11 at noon.  Children must be registered, and a $1 admission fee is due at check in.  To register call 302-227-7087.

Saturday, March 23rd: Children’s Easter Party
The American Legion Post 17 in Lewes is hosting an Easter Party for all children 10 and younger.  There will be eggs, games, and refreshments from noon until 2pm.

Saturday, March 23rd: Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra Spring Concert
The Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra will perform at Mariner’s Bethel United Methodist Church (81 Central Ave at the corner of Rt 26) in Ocean View.  For more information call 888-846-8600.

Saturday, March 23rd:  Battery 519 Lantern Tour
Tour the gun battery in Cape Henlopen State Park by lantern light and learn how soldiers defended the Atlantic coast during World War II.  Tour begins at 5:30 and is for ages 10 and above only.  $5 per person.  For more information contact Cape Henlopen State Park.

Here are some great events in and around Sussex County this weekend.  Definitely check some of them out!

Friday, March 15th – Lewes & Milton: A Shared Heritage
The Lewes Historical Society presents this special discussion from 7:30pm-9pm on Friday night.  This event will take place at the Lewes Presbyterian Church Hall (133 Kings Highway).  Admission is free and reservations are not required.  This discussion led by former State Archivist Russ McCabe will delve into the shared agricultural, shipbuilding, and historic heritage of these two towns and their cultures.

Saturday, March 16th – Merchants’ Attic II
Delaware’s largest indoor garage sale is back this Saturday!  This event takes place at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Hall (229 Rehoboth Ave.) and doors open promptly at 9:30am.  There is no admission, but donations to benefit the Chamber Event Fund are welcome.  The sale is open until 1:30pm.  For more information, call the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Chamber of Commerce at 302-227-2233 x11.

Saturday, March 16th – Savory Sussex
This week’s Savory Sussex will feature Honey Bee Lake Apiary from Franford, DE.  The program runs from 2pm-3pm at the Zwaanendael Museum in Lewes.

Saturday, March 16th – Bayhealth’s Annual Family Wellness Expo & Baby Fair
This event takes place from 10am-1pm at the Delaware State Fairgrounds in Harrington.  Over 40 Bayhealth departments, non-profit community groups, and other exhibitors will share information on healthy living options for families, seniors, and children.  Screens for cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, skin cancer, balance, posture and sleep disorders will be available alongside raffles, entertainment, giveaways and other fun activities for the entire family.  The 17th Annual Bayhealth Baby Fair will be going on simultaneously, and new and expectant parents can find a wealth of information on a wide range of childcare topics.  For more information see www.bayhealth.org.

Friday, March 8th – Lewes Lunch & Learn
Lewes Lunch & Learns are hosted by the Lewes Historical Society at the Midway School House #178 on the Lewes Historic Complex (110 Shipcarpenter Street) at noon for 20-30 minutes, followed by a question and answer period.  The second event is this Friday from 12pm-1pm.  Carl Hunt will present “Five Centuries of Information Technology, The First Town of the First State at the Cutting Edge.”  Audience members are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch, and the Lewes Historical Society will provide soft drinks.  For more information call 302-645-7670.

Friday, March 8th – Mid-Atlantic Wine & Food Festival
The Mid-Atlantic Wine & Food Festival is taking place all weekend (it started today, actually!) all over the state.  There are 44 events in all, supporting the Rehoboth Beach Film Society and eight other arts organizations throughout Delaware.  One, local event is Bourbon + Bacon: South from 5pm-7pm on Friday at local favorite, Nage (19730 Coastal Highway) in Rehoboth Beach.  To purchase tickets to this or any other of the festival events and support the Rehoboth Beach Film Society check out this link.

Saturday, March 9th – Big Fish Grill Cooking Class
Cooking classes at this local favorite include hands-on participation, a meet & greet with the chef, wine and cheese tasting, wine pairing, and several courses of instruction.  Doors open at 9:45 and classes are from 10am-1pm.  Pre-registration is required.  For more information or to register check out this link.

Saturday, March 9th – Rehoboth Art League Young at Art Exhibition
The Rehoboth Art League (12 Dodds Lane) will display artwork from students in both public and private local schools.  The opening reception is from 10am-1pm this Saturday and the show runs through March 23rd.  Support young, local artists and check it out!

Sunday, March 10th – St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Irish Eyes Pub & Bar will host the Annual Milton St. Patrick’s Day Parade this Sunday in downtown Milton.  The parade kicks off at 2pm.  This year there is also a Lucky Leprechaun 5K Run/Walk to benefit the Milton Chamber prior to the race.  Registration begins at 11am and the race starts at noon.  For more information call 302-684-8889.

Spotlight on the Lewes Tulip Festival

The popular Lewes Tulip Festival will be held Thursday, April 11th-Saturday, April 13th this year.  Photos for the official photo contest are currently being accepted at the Fisher-Martin House (120 Kings Hwy) in Lewes from 10am-4pm weekdays until March 25th.  Categories for this year’s contest are Lewes architecture, Lewes landscapes, Quintessential Lewes, Tulips, Lewes Food, and Lewes Pets.  The cost is $5 per submission and there is a maximum of 5 submissions per photographer.  A grand prize of $100 will be awarded at the close of the festival.  For more information check out this full list of rules and details.  Be sure to get your entries in, and stay tuned for more information on the Tulip Festival as it approaches!

Saturday, March 2nd: The Jasper String Quartet
The Jasper String Quartet performs as part of the Coastal Concert Series this Saturday at Bethel United Methodist Church (129 W. Fourth Street) in Lewes.  This critically acclaimed group is the winner of various awards and will be concentrating on the works of Bartok and Schubert.  For more information or to purchase tickets, check out this link.

Saturday, March 2nd: 23rd Annual Chocolate Festival
Chocolate lovers will unite at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center from 11:30am-3:30pm on Saturday for a day of decadent desserts and family fun!  Admission is only $2 (free for children under 5) and tastes are 50 cents each.  Delicious!

Of course the heart of the chocolate festival is the baking contest, which is open to anyone who wishes to enter.  The categories are restaurants, bakery, professional/chef, amateur, showpiece, children under 12 & showpiece for children under 12.  Each category has the 7 subcategories of cookies, cheesecake, brownies, candy, pies, cake, and most unusual.  There are prizes and it’s not too late to enter.  All you have to do is bring your entry or entries and this entry form to the Convention Hall between 7am-8:30am the day of the contest.

Saturday, Feb. 23rd – Big Fish Grill Cooking Class

Saturday, Feb. 23rd – Nanticoke Health Fair
The Nanticoke Health Fair takes place at Laurel High School (1133 S. Central Ave in Laurel) from 7:30am-2pm Saturday.  This community event is for all ages and includes health screenings, demonstrations, and activities for the whole family.  Health screenings include cholesterol, glucose, body mass, blood pressure, and more.

Help the American Heart Association fight heart disease in women by supporting this annual event.  The Southern Delaware “Go Red” event takes place at the Sheraton Dover Hotel (1570 N. Saturday, Feb. 9th – Lewes Winter Fest Barkfest Pet Pagaent
This 7th Annual event takes place in downtown, historic Lewes (around Second Street).  Bank Street is renamed Bark Street for the event and pets of all kinds can strut their stuff.  Categories include formal wear, leisure wear, companion look-alike, and kids freestyle.  You can pre-register your pet at P.U.P.S. All Weekend – Rehoboth Beach Film Society “What Makes Us Tick” Series
The “What Makes Us Tick” is an annual, three-part film series that includes post-screening discussions led by professional mental health practitioners.  This year’s theme is “Families Taking the Gloves Off:  From Conflict to Understanding.”  And the films were selected to demonstrate families facing multiple challenges, with post-screening discussions including topics such as sibling rivalry, parent-child conflict, bullying, ethical dilemmas, and dealing with issues such as illness and death.  All films will be screened at the Swan Ballroom in the Atlantic Sands Hotel (100 N. Boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach) and tickets are $13 per film and $36 for the three-film package.  Screenings are of The Savages on Friday, the 18th at 7pm, In A Better World on Saturday, the 19th at 2pm, and Pieces of April on Sunday, the 20th at 2pm.  For tickets or more information check out this link.

This huge, annual yard sale takes place at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center from 7am-12pm on Saturday.  Cost is $2 and children under 12 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.  All proceeds from the sale benefit Wicomico Recreation.  If you’re interested in selling, call 410-548-4911 to see if there are any tables or booths available.

Sunday, 1/6:  Delmarva Bridal Showcase
From diamonds and dresses to flowers and food, the Delmarva Bridal Showcase covers all of the bride’s needs from start to finish.  If you’re planning a wedding, or know someone who is you don’t want to miss this huge event.  In addition to the chance to talk with industry professionals, the day also includes live entertainment, fashion shows, prizes (including the chance to win a free honeymoon), catering and cake samples, and plenty of tips and tricks from the professionals.  The event runs from 12pm-4pm on Sunday.  Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door.  For more information or to purchase tickets, check out delmarvabride.com.

This isn’t a weekend event, but it’s still pretty cool.  Catch 54 Fish House (Rt 54 in Fenwick Island) is offering a free cooking demonstration that focuses on low cal and healthy food choices for the whole family.  Cocktail hour begins at 4:45 with small plates available for purchase.  The free cooking demo follows from 6pm-7pm.  Reservations are required, and tend to fill quickly, so call 302-436-8600 to reserve a spot.

1.  In Rehoboth Beach – check out the Atlantic Sands Hotel.  Tickets are $125 and include live entertainment, a DJ, deluxe dinner buffet, cocktail reception, five hours of open bar and a champagne toatst – 302-227-2511.

The last weekend of 2012 is a slow one in the area.  Everyone is gearing up for New Years Parties!  However, if you’re looking for something to do, check out the Holiday Family Program at Cape Henlopen State Park.  Thursday, Friday & Saturday at 11am the park staff will show what makes a fish a fish.  There is a fee of $2 per person.  Pre-registration is required.  You can pre-register by calling 302-645-6852.  At 2pm Thursday, Friday & Saturday a naturalist will present cool fish facts during a fish feeding at the Seaside Nature Center.  The Nature Center is also open for touring from 9pm-4pm and the borrow a bike program is available from 9am-3pm all weekend, weather permitting.

Saturday, 11/17 – Ritz Chamber Players
The Baltimore Sun called the Ritz Chamber Players “one of the most interesting and dynamic ensembles to emerge in recent years.”  Currently in their 11th year of performing the Ritz players have performed with the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, London Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, and more.  This will be the ensembles first appearance in Lewes.  The concert will take place at Bethel United Methodist Church from 8pm-10pm.  Tickets are $25.  For more information or to buy tickets, check out this website.
