If you’re looking for some free family fun this summer, check out these ongoing local events:

1.  Monday Night Movie On The Beach
Head into Dewey to the beach at Dagsworthy Street for free Monday night family movies.  Don’t forget the blanket, chairs and popcorn!  Movies begin at approximately 8:30pm and are weather dependent.  Movies begin on Monday, June 17th and run every Monday through the end of August.  For a full schedule, check out this link.

2.  Wednesday Night Bonfires on the Beach
Bring your family and the makings for some s’mores to the beach at Dagsworthy Street in Dewey every Wednesday night from 7:30pm-11pm beginning Wednesday, June 19th through the end of August.  Bonfires are weather dependent.

3.  Fenwick Flicks
Head into Fenwick Island to the beach at Farmington Street for free film screenings on Tuesday, June 18th (Mirror, Mirror), Wednesday July 17th (Madagascar 3), and Tuesday, August 13th (Oz, The Great and Powerful).  Movies will start at dusk.  Don’t forget your chairs and blankets!

4.  Cinema By The Canal

Friday, May 17th – Remember Lewes
As part of the Lewes Historical Society’s “Remembering Lewes” series Churck Fithian will bring his extensive knowledge to the Lewes Historical Society when he presents a program about Delaware’s role in the War of 1812.  The program runs from 7:30pm-9pm and will be held at the Lewes Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall on Kings Highway.  Everyone is invited to attned this free educational event.

Saturday, May 18th – Youth Finish Tournament
The Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park will host their annual youth fishing tournament on Saturday from 8am-11am, with a rain date of Sunday, 5/19.  This tournament is open to all kids ages 16 and younger.  The entrance fee is $10 and the first 50 registrants receive a free t-shirt!  Prizes are awarded.

Saturday, May 18th – Maritime Day 2013
Congress first declared Maritime Day in 1933, and the Cape May-Lewes ferry will honor that celebration on Saturday at the Lewes Ferry Terminal with a ceremony at 1pm.  Admission is free and includes engine room and bridge tours, maritime displays and more.  Food and drink will be available and the event will take place rain or shine.

Saturday, May 18th – Pooches in the Park
If your four-legged friends are more like family, consider this event which will take place from 1pm-3pm on Saturday at Canalfront Park in Lewes.  The event features specialized and pet-friendly vendors, a doggie spa, agility and obedience demos, and more.  Admission is $5 per pup, but free for their two-legged friends and owners.  One dog per handler and all dogs must be on a non-retractable leash with a maximum length of six feet.

Sunday, May 19th – Fitness ‘n Fun
Quest Fitness and Kayak is hosting its 2nd annual “Fitness ‘n Fun from 8am-12pm in Canalfront Park in Lewes on Sunday morning.  This event is completely free and open to anyone.  Activities include yoga, book camp, pilates, zumba, kick boxing, spinning, Kids FIT, and more.  For a schedule of events and more information, check out this link.

Lewes Lunch & Learns run from 12pm-1pm at the Lewes Life-Saving Station at Shipcarpenter Street and the Canal.  The Lewes Historical Society will provide soft drinks, and you can bring your lunch for this month’s discussion on “The Life and Work of a Surfman in the US Life-Saving Service 1870s-1915.”  This is the last lunch & learn of the season.

Saturday, 5/11: Dewey Beach Arts Fest
Head to the corner of Dagsworthy Ave and the beach for the second annual Dewey Beach Arts Fest will feature over 60 vendors, crafters and local artists as well as live music, food, activities for kids, a silent auction, and more!  Parking and admission are free.  Arts Fest runs from 10am-5pm with a magic show at 11:30am and 1:30pm.  Rain date is Sunday, May 12th.  For more information check out this link.

Saturday, 5/11:  Lewes Fire Department Auxiliary “Fire” and Plant Sale
The Lewes Fire Department Auxiliary is holding its 2nd annual “fire sale” and Mother’s Day plant sale at Station 1 on Savannah Road from 9am-3pm.  In addition to plant there will be a variety of vendors selling gifts, crafts, candles, and more.  There will also be refreshments for sale.  For more information please contact the Auxiliary at LFDaux@gmail.com.

Saturday, 5/11:  Flowering Wonders

Spotlight on Easter Sunrise on the Beach

With tomorrow being Easter Sunday, enjoy Easter Sunrise Service on the beach!  There will be a Community Sunrise Service at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand at 6:30am and another on the beach at Lewes at 6:30am.  And if you missed the Egg Hunt fun around town today, enjoy Easter brunch at the Rusty Rudder (113 Dickinson St.) in Dewey Beach followed by a free Egg Hunt at 2pm.  Happy Easter!

Weekend Update: March 29th-31st

This weekend is Easter weekend, and there are several great events going on in and around the area:

Friday, March 29th:  45th Annual Great Delaware Kite Festival
This fun, family event takes place on the Cape Henlopen State Park Parade Grounds from 10am-3pm Friday.  There is no entry fee to compete and competitions take place in three age groups.  Children (12 and under), Teens (13-17), and Adults (18 and up).  Each category presents awards for store-bought and home-made.  There are special class awards for Open Individual Ballet and Individual Precision, as well as awards for most senior flyer, youngest flyer, flyer furthest from home, smallest kite, and largest kite.  The Highest Kite Competition is open to everyone and takes place around 12:15pm.  There is no fee to watch, although entrance fees to Cape Henlopen do apply.  Competition begins at 10am, and there will be several vendors on site selling kites and supplies for those who wish to compete but do not have the necessary equipment.  Registration begins at 9am.  The Child and Teen competitions are in the morning, followed by the Highest Kite at 12:15 and then adult, individual ballet and individual precision competitions in the afternoon.

Friday, March 29th-Saturday, March 30th: Delaware Music Festival
Rusty Rudder (113 Dickinson Street) in Dewey Beach brings back its annual Delaware Music Festival this weekend.  Over the course of two evenings there will be 25 different bands on 4 different stages.  The event is free, but for ages 21 and up only.  Concerts start at 9pm Friday and 6pm Saturday.  For more information call 302-227-3888.

Saturday, March 30th:  First Annual Lewes Egg Hunt
Bring the whole family to Canalfront Park for Lewes’ 1st annual egg hunt!  The Easter Bunny will be there and thousands of eggs will be hidden.  In the event of rain, the hunt will take place indoors at the park building.  This event is recommended for children 10 and under.  Children must have a ticket to take place, and tickets are limited.  Cost is $5 for one ticket or $10 for 2 or more children in the same family.  To purchase tickets, go to lewescanalfrontpark.org.

Saturday, March 30th: 13th Annual Easter Egg Hunt in Georgetown
The annual Georgetown Egg Hunt is held at the Marvel Carriage Museum from 11am-1pm.  Admission is free and includes crafts, food, face painting, moon bounce, train rides, pictures with the Easter Bunny and more.  The egg hunt starts at noon.  For more information call 302-856-1544.

Saturday, March 30th: 5th Annual Alley Oop Egg Scoop
This year, Alley Oop Skim will host three separate egg hunts in Dewey Beach at New Orleans Street.  Ages 5 and under will hunt at 10am, ages 6-8 at 11am, and ages 9-11 at noon.  Children must be registered, and a $1 admission fee is due at check in.  To register call 302-227-7087.

Friday, October 5th – Lewes Merchants’ Fall Sidewalk Sale
From 10am-5pm this Friday the merchants in the Historic Lewes Commercial District will be participating in the annual fall sidewalk sale.  It’s worth checking out!

Saturday, October 6th – Lewes Historical Society Craft Show
This annual craft show is well known for the quality of the over 80 Craftspeople in attendance.  Admission is $5 at the door, and kids under 12 are free.  The show is held at the Lewes Historic Complex (110 Shipcarpenter Street) and runs from 9am-4pm.  The day also includes refreshments & live entertainment.

Saturday, October 6th – Artisan Festival in Bethany Beach
There is also an arts festival in Bethany Beach this weekend.  The event is hosted at the Bethany Beach Fire House (215 Hollywood Street) and features over 40 vendors displaying a variety of work including glass, metal, pottery, jewelry, fine art, and more.  The Festival is from 9am-3pm and admission is free.

Saturday, October 6th – Boast the Coast Maritime Festival & Lighted Boat Parade
Sponsored by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the University of Delaware College of Earth, Ocean & Environment, Boast the Coast is a fun festival that runs from 10am-dusk on Saturday.  The festival includes seafood tasting, live entertainment, kids entertainment, free tours of the Cannonball House & Lightship Overfalls, and free boat tours.  The festival concludes with a lighted boat parade at dusk.  For more information, check out this link.

Saturday, October 6th – Wings & Wheels Fall Festival in Georgetown
This 5th annual event takes place at the Sussex County Airport in Georgetown.  Over 20 vintage planes, which fly in and hundreds of cars will be at the show, which includes all day entertainment, food, games for kids, a living history program, and more.  Admission is free for this unique festival.  For more information check out this link.

All Weekend – 36th Annual Fall Sidewalk Sale in Rehoboth & Dewey
The Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center sponsors this annual event that is going into its 36th year!  The sale runs from 9am-9pm Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, although some store hours may vary.  Shopping is on downtown Rehoboth, downtown Dewey, and along Route One in between.  Call the Chamber at 302-227-2233 for more information.

All Weekend – 50th Annual Rehoboth Christmas Shop
Get your Christmas shopping started early with this annual event presented by two area churches.  The shop is set up at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center (229 Rehoboth Ave.) and costs $1 for entry.  Kids under 12 are free.  Sale hours are 10am-6pm on Friday and Saturday and 11am-4pm Sunday.  Items for sale include unique gifts, jewelry, clothing, gourmet food, holiday décor and more!  This has been a Rehoboth tradition for many years, so definitely worth checking out!  For more information call 302-227-7202.

Friday, September 21st: Fun Friday! Oktoberfest
This Friday the Lewes Chamber of Commerce will sponsor their first annual Oktoberfest!  This event will take place at Mary Vessels Park and on Market Street between Front Street and Second Street in Lewes from 4pm-8pm.  Local merchants and vendors will be serving German good and German-themed merchandise and specials throughout the day.  The festival will be all about live entertainment and family-fun and will include Bavarian dancers, an Oompah Band, and more! 

Saturday, September 22nd: Fall Beach Party in Dewey
On Saturday the Dewey Business Partnership will host their annual end of season beach party on the beach at Dagsworthy Street.  This event is open to the general public and property owners in Dewey alike.  Parking is free and the event runs from 5:30-9pm.  Good and drinks from local business will be available at discounted prices and live entertainment includes Jimi Smooth and Bruce in the USA.  This event is free to attend and is open to all ages.

Sunday, September 23rd: Sampling of Sussex County
The Jefferson School in Georgetown will be hosting its 2nd Annual Sampling of Sussex event from 12pm-3pm on Sunday.  This family friendly event will include face painting, a petting zoo, live entertainment, and samplings from local restaurants.  For more information and admissions costs call 302-856-3300.

This annual event takes place on the beach at Dagsworthy Street from 11am-2pm on Tuesday with registration beginning at 10am.  30 teams from some of your favorite local restaurants will take place in fun competitions including kayak racing, tray carrying, and an obstacle course.  Last year’s champion was Jake’s Seafood House with The Cultured Pearl and The Lighthouse rounding out the podium.  Which local eatery will be this year’s champion?  In case of rain this event will take place on Thursday, 6/21 at the same time.  Come out and cheer on your favorite!

Wednesday, 6/20: Bonfire on the Beach
Dewey kicks off their weekly Wednesday Night bonfire this week on the beach at Dagsworthy Street.  Bonfires will take place every Wednesday (except July 4th) through the end of August. Bonfires are from 7:30pm-11pm and are weather dependent.  In case of inclement weather, cancellations will be announced no later than 6pm.  Bring some beach chairs and some marshmallows to roast (you might want to throw some graham crackers and chocolate bars into your bag too!) and enjoy some summer fun with the whole family!

It’s a great weekend to find deals!  Shop downtown Rehoboth Beach, downtown Dewey Beach & even Route One!  Sales run from 10am-8pm (although some stores may have different hours), Friday 5/18-Sunday, 5/20.

Saturday, May 19th:  Kickoff to Summer Party at the Rehoboth Beach Museum
Music, food, a raffle, prizes and more!  $25 for members, $35 for non-members.  Reservations are required. 4pm-6pm

April 26th-29th:  Delmarva Birding Weekend
This unique event begins tomorrow and lasts all weekend.  Started to promote ecotourism on Delmarva, this event draws birding and wild life enthusiasts from around the country.  Check out the website for more information.

Saturday, April 28th:  Second Annual Dewey Beach Treasure Fest Community Yard Sale
You might score some great deals at this event which runs from 8am-12pm in the Ruddertowne parking lot (Dickinson Ave & the bay).  Individual yard sales will be hosted around town as well.  Happy hunting!

Saturday, April 28th:  Bug & Bud Festival
This unique festival celebrates Bugs & Flowers with all kinds of events throughout the day, including a fishing contest for kids, costume parade, free paddle boat rides, craft vendors, food, and more!  9am-4pm, Downtown Milford

Honor Lewes’ roots by celebrating the Dutch Queen’s birthday at the Zwaanendael Museum (Kings Hwy & Savannah Road).  Visitors are encouraged to wear orange in honor of the Dutch royal dynasty, the House of Orange.

Head into Historic Lewes to take part in the 3rd Annual Lewes Tulip Festival, where beauty blooms.  Activities abound throughout the town, surrounded by more than 10,000 tulips!  Click here for a schedule of events. 

Friday, April 13th – Saturday, April 14th: Dewey Beach Popfest
Want to enjoy live music and an energized, good time?  Check out Popfest hosted by The Rusty Rudder in Dewey Beach (113 Dickinson Street).  Hear Power Pop, Britpop & Pop Punk bands on four stages all weekend.

Saturday, April 14th:  Annual Flea Market at Cape Henlopen State Park
This flea market takes place at the Seaside Nature Center in Cape Henlopen State Park from 9am-3pm.  If you have items to donate they may be donated at the Nature Center on Friday, 4/13 from 10am-1pm.  There are some good deals to be had, so check it out!  (In case of rain the flea market will be held in the Auditorium.)

Saturday, April 14th:  Kiwanis Club Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser
Support the Kiwanis Club as they raise money for local children’s charities.  Enjoy all you can eat pancakes, sausage, coffee, tea, and orange juice at the Applebee’s in Rehoboth Beach (36501 Seaside Outlet Drive).  Tickets are $6.

Saturday, April 14th: The Atlantic Pearl Harbor
The Georgetown Public Library will be hosting a program called “The Atlantic Pearl Harbor: German U-Boats, Fort Miles and the Delaware Coastline” at 11am.  Hear about Fort Miles in Lewes and the terror threat presented to the East Coast by German U-boats during World War II.  This event is free and open to the public, but you must register by contacting the Georgetown Public Library (302-856-7958).

Five Great Summer Camps at the Beach

Are you looking for a great summer camp for your kids or grandkids?  There are five great camps right here at the Delaware beaches!  Check out these options:

1.  Alley-Oop Skim Summer Camp in Dewey Beach
One of the most recognized names in the sport of skimboarding, Alley-Oop is heading into its 11th season of teaching.  All levels from the beginners basic to advanced are welcome at this day camp.  Their most popular camp, the “Delaware Full Session” is a week of instruction, demonstration, and practice combined with traditional summer fun!  All campers get a chance to participate in a mini-contest in SKIM USA format at the end of the week.  Alley-Oop runs week long (Monday-Friday) camp sessions from June 25th-August 10th.  The “Delaware Full Session” is for kids ages 6-16 and is priced at $375 for the week.

2.  Camp Arrowhead in Lewes
Camp Arrowhead is situated along the beautiful Rehoboth Bay.  Run by the Episcopal Diocese of Wilmington, Camp Arrowhead offers camping opportunities for kids entering grades 2nd-11th.  Camp Arrowhead offers programs specifically geared for each age group from their “Taste of Camp” which is a 3 night camp for kids entering 2nd and 3rd grade all the way through their “Pathfinder” program for 10th and 11th graders.  There is also a day camp offered for kids entering grades 3rd-6th.  Sessions run from Sunday to Friday or Saturday (depending on the session) from June 24th through August 11th.  Prices range from $255-$925 depending on the age, length of stay, and focus area of the camper.

3.  Cape Henlopen Summer Camp in Lewes
Cape Henlopen offers ten day camp options throughout the summer.  Each session is geared toward a specific age group from age 5-12 and focuses on a specific topic.  Sessions begin June 18th and run through August 17th.  Cost ranges from $60-$200 depending on the session chosen (length of sessions vary).  Sessions are:

  • Sea Sights & Sounds – 6/18-6/22 (ages 5 & 6)
  • Buddy Up with Nature – 6/25-6/29 (ages 7 & 8)
  • Tails & Scales – 7/2-7/3 (ages 5 & 6)
  • Fur & Feathers – 7/5-7/6 (ages 5 & 6)
  • Adventure Bound – 7/9-7/13 (ages 9 & 10)
  • Fit to Survive in Nature – 7/16-7/20 (ages 7 & 8)
  • Time Travelers – 7/23-7/27 (ages 10-12)
  • Enviro-Quest – 7/30-8/3 (ages 9 & 10)
  • Move Over Nature – 8/6-8/10 (ages 7 & 8)
  • Splash & Dash – 8/13-8/17 (ages 5 & 6)

4.  Clear Space Theater Company Camp in Rehoboth Beach
Clear Space Arts Institute offers five one-week day camp “intensives” ideal for the aspiring actor/actress in your midst!  Appropriate for grades 1-12, only 40 students are accepted to each week of this popular program, so early application is recommended.  During each session, kids work together to create & perform a condenses version of a popular musical or play.  This year 1st-3rd graders will produce Cinderella (7/9-7/13), 4th-6th graders will produce Mary Poppins (7/16-7/20), and 7th-12th graders will produce Hello Dolly (7/30-8/3).  There are also two all ages week – The Adventures of Sinbad (7/23-7/27) and Thoroughly Modern Millie (8/6-8/10).  Camp runs from 8:45-4:30 each day and tuition is $275 for the week.

5.  Kids Cottage in Rehoboth Beach
Kids Cottage runs popular day camps for kids from June 18th-August 24th.  Each week of camp is divided into three separate sessions based on age (age 3, ages 4-5, and ages 6-7) and each session has a fun theme to guide the week.  Some themes this year include “Adventureland”, “Going Green”, “Ooey Gooey Science,” and “Treasure Hunters.”  These camps are $149/week and fill up fast!
