The Buttery is a great restaurant right in the midst of Historic Lewes.  The Buttery serves lunch and dinner and is well known for their Sunday brunch service!  The atmosphere is comfortable and welcoming, and the food is creative, flavorful, and delicious!  The food can be pricey, but is also well worth it.  The Buttery is the perfect place for a relaxed Sunday brunch with family, and is equally great for a lovely dinner or just about any special occasion!  The Buttery also hosts their own special events.  Locals love The Buttery and after just one visit it’s not hard to see why.  You should definitely check it out!

Saturday, October 19th: Delmarva’s Best Ghost Stories
With Halloween just around the corner, head to Wilmington University (41 Rehoboth Ave) in Rehoboth Beach to beef up your repertoire.  This workshop includes ghost stories from Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore.  Stories include Bigg Lizz, Patty Cannon, the haunted governor’s mansion, Fort Delaware, phantoms at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry and more.  Cost is $25 and you must be preregistered to attend.  The workshop runs from 11am-noon.  Call 302-227-6295 to register.

Saturday, October 19th: Herbal Soap Making from Scratch
You can learn the secrets of handcrafted soap in this introductory course.  The class includes hands on demonstrations and instruction about ingredients, safety, and more.  Attendees will take home their own freshly made soap to cure and cut at home.  This class will take place at “The Soap Fairy” in Milford Delaware and is sponsored by the Rehoboth Beach campus of Wilmington University.  Cost is $50 per person and includes all materials.  The class runs from 1pm-3pm and you must pre-register.  Call 302-227-6295 to register, and be sure to wear clothes that can get dirty.

Saturday, October 19th: Wine, Cheese, and Beer Tasting
The Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park will host their 8th annual Wine, Cheese & Beer Tasting at the Officer’s Club in Cape Henlopen from 4pm-6pm.  Admission is $20 in advance or $24 at the door.  You can purchase tickets (which also cover your entrance to the park) at the park office or the Lewes Chamber of Commerce.

Saturday, October 19th: Haunted Southern Delaware Tour
Another great way to prepare for Halloween, the Sussex Heritage Tour Series will explore the topic of “Haunted Southern Delaware” this weekend.  The tour runs from 4pm-10:30pm and begin and end at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal in Lewes.  Stops on this tour include the Cannonball House in Lewes, haunted hotels, Unknown Sailors Graveyard and more.  Tickets are $40 and must be purchased in advance.  Dinner is included in the price.  You can claim one of the limited spaces by calling the Lewes Historical Society at 302-645-7670 ext. 10.

Saturday, October 19th: Orion String Quartet
If classical music is more your style, Coastal Concerts presents the Orion String Quartet at 7pm on Saturday night.  The concert takes place at Bethel United Methodist Church (Fourth & Market Streets) in Lewes.  Tickets are $30 to see one of America’s top chamber ensembles perform.

Sunday, October 20th: Birding Field Trip
Birding guides will lead a Birding Field Trip from 8am-noon at the Prime Hook National Wild Life Refuge.  Come prepared for any weather and learn about the bird species that frequent the refuge in fall.  Bring your binoculars, field guide and a spotting scope if you have one.  Materials will be available to borrow if you don’t have your own.  Trips are free and open to everyone.  Call 302-684-8419 if you have any questions.

Hop on the Jolly Trolley in Rehoboth Beach for a local history tour.  The tour begins at the Anna Hazzard House at 17 Christian Street in downtown Rehoboth.  Tickets are $10 per person, and you must call ahead to reserve a spot.  Contact 302-227-7310 if you want to reserve your spot.

Friday, September 20th: “Fun Friday” Oktoberfest
This event will take place from 4-6:30pm on Market Street between Front and Second in Lewes.  There will be Bavarian-style dancers, a German Oompah band, local restaurants will feature German cuisine, and more.

Saturday, September 21st: Millsboro Country Festival Car Show
The Millsboro County Festival Car, Truck, and Bike Show will take place from 8am-3:30pm on Monroe Street in Millsboro.  Judging is at noon with awards at 2pm.  If you’d like to register a vehicle, it’s $15 and you can register the day of.

Saturday, September 21st: Millsboro Country Festival
This festival will take place all day on Main Street in Millsboro.  The car, truck & tractor parade will begin at 10am.  The day will also include rides, music, games, crafts, children’s activities, bed races, and more.  For more information call the Millsboro Chamber of Commerce at 302-934-6777.

Sunday, September 22nd:  Farmer & Foodie Festival
This fourth annual festival will take place at The Circle and the Brick Hotel Property in Georgetown from noon-4pm.  Admission is free for all and the day includes children’s activities, hay rides, a pig roast, live entertainment, and more.

This week’s history happy hour will feature Jim Bertholet presenting “The Life and Work of a Surfman in the US Life Saving Service 1870s-1915.”  This talk will take place at the Lewes Life Saving Station at the canal and Front Street.  All talks begin at 4pm.

Saturday, September 7th: 8th Annual Chocolate Tasting in the Park
The Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park sponsor this annual event at the Biden Center in Cape Henlopen State Park.  The event featuring all homemade chocolate runs from 1pm-4pm.  Admission is $5 and gets you 6 tastings.  For more information call 302-858-6127.

Saturday, September 7th; Chicken Plunge & Beach Party
The chicken plunge and beach party is a fun, family event.  It runs from 11am-2pm and cost is $10 per adult and $5 per child.  The beach party is held on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk at Grenoble Place.

Saturday, September 7th: 13 Annual Riverwalk Freedom Festival
Head to downtown Milford for the 13th Annual Riverwalk Festival on Saturday for all day events including a burger eating contest, downtown scavenger hunt, cornhole tournament, children’s activities, and more.  For more information, check out this link.

Saturday, September 7th: 35th Annual Bethany Beach Boardwalk Arts Festival
The town of Bethany Beach will hold their annual arts festival downtown from 10am-5pm on Saturday.  The event includes over 100 fine artists featuring paintings, wood work, metal work, pottery, baskets, jewelry and more.  This year will also include sections for farmers market goods, wine tasting and a children’s corner.

Saturday, September 7th-Sunday, September 8th: Nanticoke Indian Powwow
The 36th annual Nanticoke Indian Powow will include American Indian drummers and singers, Native American foods, Authentic Indian Arts and Crafts and more.  Over 40 tribes from across the USA will be present.  This event runs from 10am Saturday through 5pm on Sunday.  Cost is $10 per vehicle for parking and entry.  For more information call 302-945-7022.  Don’t forget to bring a lawn chair!

Saturday, August 17th: 40th Annual Outdoor Fine Art & Fine Craft Show
This annual festival continues this weekend with more than 100 artists and artisans exhibiting work in Rehoboth.  Refreshments, music, entertainment, and children’s activities will be provided.  The show runs from 10am-4pm at the Rehoboth Art League Campus (12 Dodds Lane) in Rehoboth Beach.

All Weekend: Free Concerts at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand
The US Army Field Band & Soldiers’ Chorus will kick things off on Friday, August 16th.  Another Level will perform their soul/Motown/R&B set on Saturday, August 17th and Jamie McLean will perform his New Country set on Sunday, August 18th.  All concerts are free and begin at 8pm.

This annual festival runs from 5pm-10pm on Friday night and 8am-8pm on Saturday.  The event includes performances, presentations, vendors and more.  The event takes place at the Seaford Sports Complex.  This year’s festivities will include two new additions: mascot mania where kids will eat free breakfast and play games with Sherman the Shorebird and other area mascots, and the Car & Cycle Show on the grounds of the Governor Ross Mansion.

Saturday, August 10th: 40th Annual Outdoor Fine Art & Fine Craft Show
More than 100 artists and artisans will be exhibiting work at this 40th annual festival in Rehoboth.  Refreshments, music, entertainment, and children’s activities will be provided.  The show runs from 10am-4pm at the Rehoboth Art League Campus (12 Dodds Lane) in Rehoboth Beach.

Saturday, August 10th: The Sounds of Michael McDonald
Five time grammy winner Michael McDonald will be performing at the Freeman Stage at Bayside (31750 Lake View Drive) in Selbyville.  Tickets start at $35 and are assigned seating.

On Friday night, Robert Eric will perform their Billy Joel tribute set.  On Saturday, Oh Boy! will perform a tribute to rockabilly, and Sunday NOMaD (North of Mason Dixon) will perform their new country sound.  All concerts are free and begin at 8pm.

Can you believe it’s already August?  Here are a few events going on to this weekend to kick off the new month:

Friday, August 2nd: History Happy Hour
The topic for this week’s History Happy Hour is “Jacob Jones: Naval Hero of 1812.”  Retired Navy Captain and university professor William H.J. Manthorpe will present the talk at the Lewes Historical Society at 4pm, followed by a question and answer period.

Saturday, August 3rd: Lewes Historical Society’s Antique Show
Head to the Lewes Historical Society to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the annual antique show.  The show runs from 9am-4pm and admission is $5, children under 12 are free.  The proceeds benefit the educational and preservation programming of the Historical Society.  Over 60 dealers will present 18th-20th century antiques.

Saturday, August 3rd:  Children’s Painting Class
Local artist John Donato will delight the whole family with an energetic and educational painting class.  The class is hand-on and free for all.  The class will take place at 10am at the Freeman Stage at Bayside (31750 Lake View Drive) in Selbyville.  Don’t forget lawn chairs!

Saturday: August 3rd:  35th Annual Sandcastle Contest
Over 100 teams and 800 people will participate in this year’s sand castle contest!  Contest takes place at Fisherman’s Beach at the North end of the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk.  Registration begins 8:30am and judging begins at 3pm.  Call 302-227-2233 for more information.

Who doesn’t love fresh, locally produced fruits and veggies?  We are lucky enough to have several local farmers markets worth checking out, and since they’re open different days of the week, you can have fresh food all summer long!  Here are three to check out:

Historic Lewes Farmers Market – 110 Shipcarpenter Street
Open every Saturday through the end of September. 8am-12pm.  No pets allowed.  Vendors sell everything, including fresh beef & pork, homemade jellies and jams, fruits, veggies, organic baked goods, gourmet cheeses, and more!  For a full list of vendors, check out this list.

Rehoboth Beach Farmers Market – Next to the Rehoboth Beach Chamber of Commerce (501 Rehoboth Ave.)
Open every Tuesday from noon-4pm.  In addition to the usual farmers market vendors you can also enjoy chef’s demos!  Check out the website for lots of info, suggested recipes, and a weekly newsletter.

Milton Farmers Market – Downtown Historic Milton… you can’t miss it!
Open every Friday from 3:30pm-6:30pm through the end of October.  This farmers market is only in its second year, but it’s already become a local staple!  You can friend this market on Facebook for updates and more info!

Saturday, July 27th: Seafood & Arts Festival
Head to the beautiful Indian River Marina for this 5th annual festival from 10am-6pm.  Enjoy fresh seafood, delicious treats, live music, children’s activities, and lots of artists and vendors!

All Weekend: Rehoboth Beach Bandstand
Friday, July 26th Paul Cullen will present his unique mix of jazz, current, classic & original works for a groovy performance.  On Saturday, July 27th the City of Fairfax Band will play its concert band set, and The Uptown Band will round out the weekend on Sunday, July 28th with their top 40/Motown sound.  All shows begin at 8pm and are free to the public.

Thursday, July 18th:  Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge
Head to Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge Thursday for several fun, free events.
Birding Field Trip:  This trip is led by local birding guides.  Bring binoculars, a field guide and a spotting scope if you have one.  The trip is free and open to the public.  Meet at the refuge office 10-15 minutes ahead of schedule and come dressed weather appropriately.  The trip will run approximately 8am-11am.
Pondside Adventures:  Discover what types of insects and aquatic life are in the area from 1:30pm-2:30pm.  Footwear that can get wet is required, no flip flops.  Sunscreen and hats are recommended.  All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Friday, July 19th: Nate Myers & The Aces
Head to Canalfront Park in Lewes for a free Americana/blues inspired concert sponsored by Dogfish Head Brewery.  The show begins at 6:30pm.  Don’t forget a lawn chair and some bug spray!

Saturday, July 20th: The Sound of Music
Local theatre company, Clear Space will perform the classic Broadway production, The Sound of Music on the Freeman Stage at Bayside (31750 Lake View Drive in Selbyville).  Show begins at 7pm.  Cost is $10 per person, but kids 18 and under are free.  Don’t forget lawn chairs!

Saturday, July 20th:  Everyday Magic Artwork
Millville Town Peddler and Reynolds’ Back Door Surfboards will host artist Sharon O’Bien Huey and her “Everyday Magic Artwork” for a month-long exhibit.  This artist reception will kick off the event at 4pm with a meet the artist.  Admission to both the reception and the month-long show are free.  Come and enjoy the art, reception, specials and refreshments.  The event will be held at 35308 Atlantic Ave. in Millville.

All Weekend: Free Concerts at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand
Groove Train will perform a fun 70’s Disco & Funk show on Friday night, followed by a classic and modern rock performance by King’s Ransom on Saturday.  The Milford Community Band will wrap up the weekend with their performance on Sunday.  All concerts are free and begin at 8pm.

All Weekend: Free Concerts at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand

July 4th Plans in Sussex

Unbelievably, it’s already July!  With the celebration of Independence Day later this week I thought I would spend some time highlighting a few of the best options for celebrating July 4th in Sussex County.  Here are a couple of fun options for the family:

Old Fashioned 4th of July in Lewes:  On the Fourth of July enjoy old fashioned children’s games and activities begin at 9am on 2nd Street.  The decorated boat parade on the canal begins at 2pm and the “Infamous Doo-Dah Parade” begins around 5pm across from BeeBe Medical Center just off of Savannah Road – jump right in and join the fun!  Lewes’ Old Fashioned 4th of July is sponsored by the City of Lewes, the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and the Lightship Overfalls.

Small Town Charm in Laurel:  Celebrate Independence Day on Saturday, July 6th with small-town charm in Laurel.  Events begin at 11am with the annual parade.  Other highlights include old fashioned family games at noon, a hot dog eating contest at 1:30pm, and fireworks over the lake at 9:15pm.  There will be events, food, and vendors all day long.

Celebrate Cruise Style: Make reservations on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry for the spectacular fireworks cruise on the Delaware Bay on Wednesday, July 3rd.  The cruise departs Lewes at 7:15pm.  Make reservations online or call 800-643-3779.

Friday, June 28th: WaCongo Dance Company & Drum Classes
Head to the Freeman Stage at Bayside (31750 Lake View Drive) in Selbyville and enjoy the WaCongo Dance Company, a traditional ensemble of drummers, musicians, and dancers from the Democratic Republic of Congo.  The performance is free for all.  They will follow the performance with Congolese Drum Classes on Saturday, 6/29 at 10am, which are also free.

Saturday, June 29th: Wheels For Meals Classic Car Show
Head into the CHEER Community Center (20520 Sand Hill Road) in Georgetown from 10am-2pm to support Wheels for Meals.  Admission is $5 for ages 10 and up, and free for ages 9 and under.  The day features the car show, displays, entertainment, and food vendors.

Sunday, June 30th: Paddle Fenwick Festival
The first annual Paddle Fenwick Festival will take place on the Indian River and will be divided into several divisions and classes.  The top three finishers in each division as well as each age bracket will be awarded.  There will also be a “Kids and Critters Fun Paddle” from 1:30-2pm.  All proceeds support Operation Second Chance.  For more information check out this link.

All Weekend: Rehoboth Beach Bandstand
Enjoy the rhythm and blues performance by Vinyl Shockley on Friday, June 28th, the classic Zydeco beats of Zydeco-A-Go-Go on Saturday, June 29th and the hometown sounds of the Rehoboth Concert Band on Sunday, June 30th.  All concerts are free and start at 8pm.

2.  Wednesday Night Bonfires on the Beach
Bring your family and the makings for some s’mores to the beach at Dagsworthy Street in Dewey every Wednesday night from 7:30pm-11pm beginning Wednesday, June 19th through the end of August.  Bonfires are weather dependent.

3.  Fenwick Flicks
Head into Fenwick Island to the beach at Farmington Street for free film screenings on Tuesday, June 18th (Mirror, Mirror), Wednesday July 17th (Madagascar 3), and Tuesday, August 13th (Oz, The Great and Powerful).  Movies will start at dusk.  Don’t forget your chairs and blankets!

4.  Cinema By The Canal
Head to Canalfront Park in Lewes for free film screenings on June 19th (Cirque Du Soliel: Worlds Away), July 10th (The Pirates! Band of Misfits), July 31st (Here Comes The Boom), and August 14th (The Odd Life of Timothy Green).  Movies begin at dusk.  Don’t forget your lawn chairs!

5.  Summer Concert Series at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand

Three Free Summer Concert Series To Check Out

Now that the summer season is underway, free entertainment abounds.  Here are three free summer concert series that will run this summer:

1.  Summer Concerts at Stango Park in Lewes – Bring a blanket or lawn chair to Stango Park in Lewes, next to the Library along Kings Highway for a free concert every Tuesday night through the end of August.  Concerts run from 7pm-8:30pm.  The 2013 Summer Music Concert series is sponsored by WSFS Bank and the City of Lewes.  For a complete list of bands playing this summer check out this link.

2.  Summer Concert Series at Milton Memorial Park – This summer concert series is Wednesday nights through the end of August.  Concerts begin at 7pm.  For a complete schedule of bands and sponsors, check out this link.

3.  Concerts by the Canal – Free concerts at Canalfront Park are sponsored by Dogfish Head Brewery.  Concerts begin at 6:30pm and are on June 28th (Chester River Runoff), July 19th (Nate Myers & The Acres), and August 9th (The Bullbuckers).

It’s a big weekend in the area, with several area stages opening for the summer entertainment season.  Check out these events for something fun to do this weekend:

Thursday, June 13th: Rehoboth Beach History Tour
Hop on the Jolly Trolley for a local history tour of Rehoboth Beach offered by the Rehoboth Beach Museum.  Cost is $10 and the tour begins at 9am at the Anna Hazzard House (17 Christian Street) in downtown Rehoboth.  Call 302-227-7310 to reserve a seat.

All Weekend (Friday-Sunday): Family Boat-Building Weekend
Head down to the Lewes Canal this Father’s Day Weekend for the fourth annual family boat-building weekend.  Sponsored by the Lewes Historical Society, there are events all weekend.  For more information, call 302-645-7670.

All Weekend (Friday-Sunday): Opening weekend at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand
The season officially opens at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand  this weekend with the Friday night performance of local modern rock band, Love Seed Mama Jump.  Saturday’s performance is by buzzy new country group The Stickers.  Sunday wraps up opening weekend with the classic soul music of Jimi Smooth & Hittime.  All shows are free and begin at 8pm.

Friday, June 14th: Flag Day on Front Street
Head down to Front Street in Lewes to celebrate our nation’s red, white & blue!

Friday, June 14th:  Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra
Enjoy opening night at the Freeman Stage at Bayside with the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Julien Benichou.  In addition to classic symphony pieces the Orchestra will also perform pop favorites and some other surprises as well.  Tickets are $10 per person and kids 18 & under are free.  Bring your own chair.

Saturday, June 15th: Lewes Garden Tour
The 23rd annual Lewes Garden Tour is a self-guided tour of seven private gardens and one public one.  The tour runs from 10am-4pm and tickets are $20 in advance or $25 the day of.  Tickets can be purchased at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce.  The tour also includes vendors, food and beverages, and a free shuttle service for ticket holders.  For more information call the Chamber at 877-465-3937.

Saturday, June 8th: Secret Lives of Horseshoe Crabs
Explore the beach and find out what goes on inside the horseshoe crab.  This program is run by Cape Henlopen State Park and is for ages 5 & older.  Cost is $3 per person and limit is $20 people.  Call 302-645-6852 to register.

Saturday, June 8th: Inland Bays Clean Up
Do some good for the environment by volunteering to help clean up at Massey’s Landing.  Boats with captains (gift cards for gas are available) and volunteers are needed.  Call 302-226-8105 for more info.

Saturday, June 8th: 3rd Annual Disc Golf Learn & Play
Join disc golf professionals at Cape Henlopen State Park from 8am-12pm to learn how to play disc golf!  Cost is $10 per person.

Sunday, June 9th:  Adelante in Concert
Relax in Olly’s garden at All Saint’s Episcopal Church (18 Olive Ave) in Rehoboth Beach and enjoy the smooth jazz trio of Adelante.  No charge, bring a lawn chair or blanket.  The concert runs from 2pm-3pm.

Sunday, June 9th: Fish ‘n’ Kids
Head down to Lewes Canalfront Park from 10am-12pm for the 3rd annual Fish ‘n’ Kids event hosted by Quest Fitness and Kayak.  The day will be filled with events for kids from ages 3-12.  Favorite events include building and using your own fishing rod and embossing a fish t-shirt.  The first 50 kids get a free t-shirt, or you are welcome to bring your own.  Water and fishing related games will be plentiful and a surf-fishing/net-casting demonstration will be provided.  This event is free for everyone.  For more information call 302-644-7020.

Summer season is officially underway!  Here are some fun activities going on this weekend:

Saturday, June 1st: Prime Hook/Lower Sussex Bassmasters’ Youth Fishing Tournament
This 10th annual event takes place on the Broadkill River in Milton Memorial Park.  The tournament begins at 9am with registration starting at 8am and ends at 1pm.  The event is for anglers 15 years of age and younger.  There will also be t-shirt printing, hot dogs, soda, and prizes!  Everything, including bait, hooks and weights are free!  Just bring a fishing pole.  Fishing can be done by boat (provided by volunteers) or by bank.  Raindate is Sunday, June 2nd.

Saturday, June 1st: National Trails Day
Join in helping to clean up the trails at Cape Henlopen State Park to celebrate National Trails Day.  Cleanup is from 9am-1pm and volunteers are meeting at the “Hawk Watch” pavilion.

Sunday, June 2nd: Picnic in the Park
The Friends of Canalfront Park will host their second annual “Picnic in the Park” at Canalfront Park in Lewes from 12pm-3pm on Sunday.  Fourteen Lewes restaurants, including The Buttery, Café Azafran, and Irish Eyes will offer tasting at this event and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be served.  Kids are welcome and events will include old-fashioned carnival games, face painting, a balloon artist and more.  Admission is $10 in advance, $15 at the door and $5 for kids under 12.  Food & beverage tickets are $2 at the event.  For more information check out this link.

Friday, May 24th: Lightship Overfalls Opening Party & Auction
This year celebrates the 75th birthday for “Big Red,” the historic lightship in Lewes.  This fabulous annual party will take place from 6pm-9pm at the Virden Center on the University of Delaware Marine Campus.  Tickets are $40 in advance or $45 at the door until they are sold out.  This event is a great kick-off to the summer season and includes food and drink, games, raffles, silent and live auctions and more.  For more information or to purchase tickets, check out the Overfalls website.

Saturday, May 25th: Horseshoe Crab & Shorebird Festival
This annual event is hosted by the Milton Chamber of Commerce and will run from 10am-4pm at Milton Memorial Park.  This will be the tenth year for the festival, which boast over 1500 visitors yearly.  The day includes arts and crafts, boat rides on the Broadkill River, canoe trips on Prime Hook Creek, games, food, music, trail walks, kids’ train rides, a scavenger hunt, and more!  A shuttle bus is available to transport guests to and from the Refuge.  For more information contact 302-684-1101.
