Who doesn’t love fresh, locally produced fruits and veggies?  We are lucky enough to have several local farmers markets worth checking out, and since they’re open different days of the week, you can have fresh food all summer long!  Here are three to check out:

Historic Lewes Farmers Market – 110 Shipcarpenter Street
Open every Saturday through the end of September. 8am-12pm.  No pets allowed.  Vendors sell everything, including fresh beef & pork, homemade jellies and jams, fruits, veggies, organic baked goods, gourmet cheeses, and more!  For a full list of vendors, check out this list.

Rehoboth Beach Farmers Market – Next to the Rehoboth Beach Chamber of Commerce (501 Rehoboth Ave.)
Open every Tuesday from noon-4pm.  In addition to the usual farmers market vendors you can also enjoy chef’s demos!  Check out the website for lots of info, suggested recipes, and a weekly newsletter.

Milton Farmers Market – Downtown Historic Milton… you can’t miss it!
Open every Friday from 3:30pm-6:30pm through the end of October.  This farmers market is only in its second year, but it’s already become a local staple!  You can friend this market on Facebook for updates and more info!

If you’re looking for something fun to do this weekend, check out these area events:

Friday, May 24th: Lightship Overfalls Opening Party & Auction
This year celebrates the 75th birthday for “Big Red,” the historic lightship in Lewes.  This fabulous annual party will take place from 6pm-9pm at the Virden Center on the University of Delaware Marine Campus.  Tickets are $40 in advance or $45 at the door until they are sold out.  This event is a great kick-off to the summer season and includes food and drink, games, raffles, silent and live auctions and more.  For more information or to purchase tickets, check out the Overfalls website.

Saturday, May 25th: Horseshoe Crab & Shorebird Festival
This annual event is hosted by the Milton Chamber of Commerce and will run from 10am-4pm at Milton Memorial Park.  This will be the tenth year for the festival, which boast over 1500 visitors yearly.  The day includes arts and crafts, boat rides on the Broadkill River, canoe trips on Prime Hook Creek, games, food, music, trail walks, kids’ train rides, a scavenger hunt, and more!  A shuttle bus is available to transport guests to and from the Refuge.  For more information contact 302-684-1101.

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market opened for the season last week and will be open every Saturday until the end of September.  Most Saturdays the farmer’s market is at the Historical Society (110 Shipcarpenter Street), but on June 22nd, July 13th, and August 3rd the market will move to the Shields Elementary School parking lot (910 Shields Ave.).  Vendors sell everything, including fresh beef & pork, homemade jellies and jams, fruits, veggies, organic baked goods, gourmet cheese, and more.  For a full list of vendors, check out this list.  It is definitely worth checking out, although you should leave your pets at home because they are not allowed.

This popular event is hosted by the Milton Chamber of Commerce and takes place at Milton Memorial Park & Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge.  Join the 1500+ other people who enjoy this annual festival and enjoy an art show, crafts, boat rides, canoe trips, games, food, music, trail walks, train rides, a scavenger hunt, and more!  A shuttle bus is available to take guests from the park to the refuge and back.  10am-4pm

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market opens this weekend for another season!  Located at the Lewes Historical Society Complex (110 Shipcarpenter Street), the HLFM offers the freshest local foods available in an educational, community-oriented, family-friendly setting!  Support local farmers every Saturday starting this weekend and running through the end of September.  8am-12pm every Saturday from May 26-September 29, 2012.

Saturday, May 26th-Sunday, May 27thSeaford’s Heritage Weekend
This 5th Annual event is held at the Governor Ross Plantation all weekend.  It features a living history encampment, demonstrators, crafts & exhibits.  Living history artisans will demonstrate period crafts and re-enactors will participate in demonstrations.  In addition, there will be live music and entertainment.  Art and antique cars will also be displayed.  For more information check out this YouTube video or call 302-629-9690.  Opening ceremonies take place at 10am on Saturday.

Sunday, May 27th:  Lantern Tours of Fort Miles
Historic Fort Miles, located in Cape Henlopen State Park was an important defense position during World War 2.  This weekend you have the opportunity to tour the gun battery by lantern light and learn about how soldiers defended the U.S. coast.  There is a limit of 30 for this tour and pre-registration is required.  Cost is $5 per person, and it is for ages 10 and up only.  Call 302-645-6852 to register or get more information.

Sunday, May 27thConcerts in Cupola Park
Head down to Cupola Park in Millsboro from 6pm-8pm for a free outdoor concert sponsored by Thoro-Good’s Concrete.  This week’s performers are “The Funsters,” a ten-piece band that has been performing together for over 12 years!  Performing a wide variety of pieces from Frank Sinatra to the Beatles to the Rolling Stones and more, this band has roots in Southern Delaware and enjoys playing to their home crowd!
