More Ideas for Celebrating Independence Day

Yesterday I highlighted a few great ideas for celebrating July 4^th in Sussex County. Here are a few more:

Bethany in Bloom: The festivities begin in Bethany Beach at noon on the 4^th with the theme “Wish You Were Here for Bethany in Bloom.” The parade steps off at the intersection of Pennsylvania and Garfield at noon. There will also a be a horseshoe throwing contest and live band with fireworks commencing at dusk.

Tradition at Rehoboth: More than 100,000 people gathered on the boardwalk in Rehoboth and this year is shaping up to be just as great! Head to downtown Rehoboth for the fireworks show at dusk. Local favorite, The Funsters will be performing on the bandstand as well.

Fun in Ocean City: If you want to head out of Sussex, Ocean City for a free concert at 8pm followed by fireworks at 9:30pm downtown on the beach at North Division Street or uptown at 125^th Street and Northside Park. For more information call 800-626-2326.

July 4th Plans in Sussex

Unbelievably, it’s already July! With the celebration of Independence Day later this week I thought I would spend some time highlighting a few of the best options for celebrating July 4^th in Sussex County. Here are a couple of fun options for the family:

Old Fashioned 4^th of July in Lewes: On the Fourth of July enjoy old fashioned children’s games and activities begin at 9am on 2^nd Street. The decorated boat parade on the canal begins at 2pm and the “Infamous Doo-Dah Parade” begins around 5pm across from BeeBe Medical Center just off of Savannah Road – jump right in and join the fun! Lewes’ Old Fashioned 4^th of July is sponsored by the City of Lewes, the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and the Lightship Overfalls.

Small Town Charm in Laurel: Celebrate Independence Day on Saturday, July 6^th with small-town charm in Laurel. Events begin at 11am with the annual parade. Other highlights include old fashioned family games at noon, a hot dog eating contest at 1:30pm, and fireworks over the lake at 9:15pm. There will be events, food, and vendors all day long.

Celebrate Cruise Style: Make reservations on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry for the spectacular fireworks cruise on the Delaware Bay on Wednesday, July 3rd. The cruise departs Lewes at 7:15pm. Make reservations online or call 800-643-3779.

Friday, June 28^th: Concert By The Canal
Head to Canalfront Park in Lewes on Friday evening for a free concert sponsored by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery. Chester River Runoff will perform beginning at 6:30pm. The concert is free, just remember to bring a lawn chair and bug repellant!

Friday, June 28^th: WaCongo Dance Company & Drum Classes
Head to the Freeman Stage at Bayside (31750 Lake View Drive) in Selbyville and enjoy the WaCongo Dance Company, a traditional ensemble of drummers, musicians, and dancers from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The performance is free for all. They will follow the performance with Congolese Drum Classes on Saturday, 6/29 at 10am, which are also free.

Saturday, June 29^th: Wheels For Meals Classic Car Show
Head into the CHEER Community Center (20520 Sand Hill Road) in Georgetown from 10am-2pm to support Wheels for Meals. Admission is $5 for ages 10 and up, and free for ages 9 and under. The day features the car show, displays, entertainment, and food vendors.

Sunday, June 30^th: Paddle Fenwick Festival
The first annual Paddle Fenwick Festival will take place on the Indian River and will be divided into several divisions and classes. The top three finishers in each division as well as each age bracket will be awarded. There will also be a “Kids and Critters Fun Paddle” from 1:30-2pm. All proceeds support Operation Second Chance. All Weekend: Rehoboth Beach Bandstand
Enjoy the rhythm and blues performance by Vinyl Shockley on Friday, June 28^th, the classic Zydeco beats of Zydeco-A-Go-Go on Saturday, June 29^th and the hometown sounds of the Rehoboth Concert Band on Sunday, June 30^th. All concerts are free and start at 8pm.

Saturday, June 22^nd: Jack & The Beanstalk
If you have young children, the Freeman Stage at Bayside presents a two-man show of Jack and the Beanstalk on Saturday, June 22^nd. The show is designed for ages 3 and up and is free for everyone.

Saturday, June 22^nd-Sunday, June 23^rd: Mid-Atlantic Sea Glass & Coastal Arts Festival
This 4^th annual festival will run from 9am-4pm Saturday and 9am-3pm Sunday at the Lewes Historical Center Complex. Admission is $5 per person and children under 12 are free, this includes a wrist band that is good for both days. The event includes crafters, vendors, beautiful artwork and activities for children. All Weekend: Free Concerts at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand
The Lower Case Blues will perform “modern, energetic blues” on Friday, 6/21. The Eddie Sherman Show will perform their traditional jazz show on Saturday, 6/22, and on Sunday, 6/23 the Lloyd Dobler Effect will perform their well known rock show. All shows are free and begin at 8pm.

5 Free Family Events This Summer

If you’re looking for some free family fun this summer, check out these ongoing local events:

1. Monday Night Movie On The Beach
Head into Dewey to the beach at Dagsworthy Street for free Monday night family movies. Don’t forget the blanket, chairs and popcorn! Movies begin at approximately 8:30pm and are weather dependent. Movies begin on Monday, June 17^th and run every Monday through the end of August. For a full schedule, check out this link.

2. Wednesday Night Bonfires on the Beach
Bring your family and the makings for some s’mores to the beach at Dagsworthy Street in Dewey every Wednesday night from 7:30pm-11pm beginning Wednesday, June 19^th through the end of August. Bonfires are weather dependent.

3. Fenwick Flicks
Head into Fenwick Island to the beach at Farmington Street for free film screenings on Tuesday, June 18^th (Mirror, Mirror), Wednesday July 17^th (Madagascar 3), and Tuesday, August 13^th (Oz, The Great and Powerful). Movies will start at dusk. Don’t forget your chairs and blankets!

4. Cinema By The Canal
Head to Canalfront Park in Lewes for free film screenings on June 19^th (Cirque Du Soliel: Worlds Away), July 10^th (The Pirates! Band of Misfits), July 31^st (Here Comes The Boom), and August 14^th (The Odd Life of Timothy Green). Movies begin at dusk. Don’t forget your lawn chairs!

5. Summer Concert Series at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand

Three Free Summer Concert Series To Check Out

Now that the summer season is underway, free entertainment abounds. Here are three free summer concert series that will run this summer:

1. Summer Concerts at Stango Park in Lewes – Bring a blanket or lawn chair to Stango Park in Lewes, next to the Library along Kings Highway for a free concert every Tuesday night through the end of August. Concerts run from 7pm-8:30pm. The 2013 Summer Music Concert series is sponsored by WSFS Bank and the City of Lewes. For a complete list of bands playing this summer check out this link.

2. Summer Concert Series at Milton Memorial Park – This summer concert series is Wednesday nights through the end of August. Concerts begin at 7pm. For a complete schedule of bands and sponsors, check out this link.

3. Concerts by the Canal – Free concerts at Canalfront Park are sponsored by Dogfish Head Brewery. Concerts begin at 6:30pm and are on June 28^th (Chester River Runoff), July 19^th (Nate Myers & The Acres), and August 9^th (The Bullbuckers).

It’s a big weekend in the area, with several area stages opening for the summer entertainment season. Check out these events for something fun to do this weekend:

Thursday, June 13^th: Rehoboth Beach History Tour
Hop on the Jolly Trolley for a local history tour of Rehoboth Beach offered by the Rehoboth Beach Museum. Cost is $10 and the tour begins at 9am at the Anna Hazzard House (17 Christian Street) in downtown Rehoboth. Call 302-227-7310 to reserve a seat.

All Weekend (Friday-Sunday): Family Boat-Building Weekend
Head down to the Lewes Canal this Father’s Day Weekend for the fourth annual family boat-building weekend. Sponsored by the Lewes Historical Society, there are events all weekend. For more information, call 302-645-7670.

All Weekend (Friday-Sunday): Opening weekend at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand
The season officially opens at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand this weekend with the Friday night performance of local modern rock band, Love Seed Mama Jump. Saturday’s performance is by buzzy new country group The Stickers. Sunday wraps up opening weekend with the classic soul music of Jimi Smooth & Hittime. All shows are free and begin at 8pm.

Friday, June 14^th: Flag Day on Front Street
Head down to Front Street in Lewes to celebrate our nation’s red, white & blue!

Friday, June 14^th: Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra
Enjoy opening night at the Freeman Stage at Bayside with the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Julien Benichou. In addition to classic symphony pieces the Orchestra will also perform pop favorites and some other surprises as well. Tickets are $10 per person and kids 18 & under are free. Bring your own chair.

Saturday, June 15^th: Lewes Garden Tour
The 23^rd annual Lewes Garden Tour is a self-guided tour of seven private gardens and one public one. The tour runs from 10am-4pm and tickets are $20 in advance or $25 the day of. Tickets can be purchased at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce. The tour also includes vendors, food and beverages, and a free shuttle service for ticket holders. Saturday, June 8^th: Inland Bays Clean Up
Do some good for the environment by volunteering to help clean up at Massey’s Landing. Boats with captains (gift cards for gas are available) and volunteers are needed. Call 302-226-8105 for more info.

Saturday, June 8^th: 3^rd Annual Disc Golf Learn & Play
Join disc golf professionals at Cape Henlopen State Park from 8am-12pm to learn how to play disc golf! Cost is $10 per person.

Sunday, June 9^th: Adelante in Concert
Relax in Olly’s garden at All Saint’s Episcopal Church (18 Olive Ave) in Rehoboth Beach and enjoy the smooth jazz trio of Adelante. No charge, bring a lawn chair or blanket. The concert runs from 2pm-3pm.

Sunday, June 9^th: Fish ‘n’ Kids
Head down to Lewes Canalfront Park from 10am-12pm for the 3^rd annual Fish ‘n’ Kids event hosted by Quest Fitness and Kayak. The day will be filled with events for kids from ages 3-12. Favorite events include building and using your own fishing rod and embossing a fish t-shirt. The first 50 kids get a free t-shirt, or you are welcome to bring your own. Water and fishing related games will be plentiful and a surf-fishing/net-casting demonstration will be provided. This event is free for everyone. For more information call 302-644-7020.

Enjoy Restaurant Week

It’s restaurant week in Rehoboth Beach this week, which means many of Rehoboth’s favorite restaurants are serving prix fixe dinner specials and some are offering lunch specials as well. Here are a few restaurants I’ve spotlighted before that you may want to check out this week:

Café Azafran (18 Baltimore Ave) is serving dinner from 5pm, featuring a 3 course menu for $35 with entrée selections including Grilled Ribeye Steak, Bacon Wrapped Pork Chop, Azafran Crab Cake or a Seafood & Pasta Sauce.

Dogfish Head Brewery (320 Rehoboth Ave) is offering a $25 three course prix fixe menu including entrée choices such as Pork Confit, Woodgrilled Rainbow Trout, Woodgrilled Brined Chicken, and more.

Eden Restaurant (23 Baltimore Ave) is offering a $45 three course prix fixe dinner menu which includes entrée choices such as Grilled Brazilian Strip Steak, Roasted Pork Tenderloin, Cioppino, and Wood Oven Roasted Rainbow Trout.

Jam Bistro (21 Baltimore Ave) is offering a $35 three course prix fixe dinner menu including entrée choices such as Pork Flat Iron, Herb Marinated Sirloin, and Stuffed Flounder.

Mariachi Restaurant (14 Wilmington Ave) is offering a two course lunch menu for $15 and a two course dinner menu for $30 with choices such as Salmon Salad, Pechuga Empanadas, Seafood Fajita, Salmon Relleno and more.

Weekend Update: May 31st-June 2nd

Summer season is officially underway! Here are some fun activities going on this weekend:

Saturday, June 1^st: Prime Hook/Lower Sussex Bassmasters’ Youth Fishing Tournament
This 10^th annual event takes place on the Broadkill River in Milton Memorial Park. The tournament begins at 9am with registration starting at 8am and ends at 1pm. The event is for anglers 15 years of age and younger. There will also be t-shirt printing, hot dogs, soda, and prizes! Everything, including bait, hooks and weights are free! Just bring a fishing pole. Fishing can be done by boat (provided by volunteers) or by bank. Raindate is Sunday, June 2^nd.

Saturday, June 1^st: National Trails Day
Join in helping to clean up the trails at Cape Henlopen State Park to celebrate National Trails Day. Cleanup is from 9am-1pm and volunteers are meeting at the “Hawk Watch” pavilion.

Sunday, June 2^nd: Picnic in the Park
The Friends of Canalfront Park will host their second annual “Picnic in the Park” at Canalfront Park in Lewes from 12pm-3pm on Sunday. Fourteen Lewes restaurants, including The Buttery, Café Azafran, and Irish Eyes will offer tasting at this event and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be served. Kids are welcome and events will include old-fashioned carnival games, face painting, a balloon artist and more. Admission is $10 in advance, $15 at the door and $5 for kids under 12. And now that the summer season is officially kicked off it’s officially the time of year for all of the free concerts to begin! The Town of Milton free summer concert series starts this week on Wednesday, 5/29 at 7pm. Concerts are held in Milton Memorial Park, and moved to the Fire Hall in case of inclement weather. This week will feature Reunion Band which plays Chicago-style rock music. Refreshments are available.

Friday, May 24^th: Lightship Overfalls Opening Party & Auction
This year celebrates the 75^th birthday for “Big Red,” the historic lightship in Lewes. This fabulous annual party will take place from 6pm-9pm at the Virden Center on the University of Delaware Marine Campus. Tickets are $40 in advance or $45 at the door until they are sold out. This event is a great kick-off to the summer season and includes food and drink, games, raffles, silent and live auctions and more. Saturday, May 25^th: Horseshoe Crab & Shorebird Festival
This annual event is hosted by the Milton Chamber of Commerce and will run from 10am-4pm at Milton Memorial Park. This will be the tenth year for the festival, which boast over 1500 visitors yearly. The day includes arts and crafts, boat rides on the Broadkill River, canoe trips on Prime Hook Creek, games, food, music, trail walks, kids’ train rides, a scavenger hunt, and more! A shuttle bus is available to transport guests to and from the Refuge. For more information contact 302-684-1101.

Friday, May 17^th – Remember Lewes
As part of the Lewes Historical Society’s “Remembering Lewes” series Churck Fithian will bring his extensive knowledge to the Lewes Historical Society when he presents a program about Delaware’s role in the War of 1812. The program runs from 7:30pm-9pm and will be held at the Lewes Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall on Kings Highway. Everyone is invited to attned this free educational event.

Saturday, May 18^th – Youth Finish Tournament
The Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park will host their annual youth fishing tournament on Saturday from 8am-11am, with a rain date of Sunday, 5/19. This tournament is open to all kids ages 16 and younger. The entrance fee is $10 and the first 50 registrants receive a free t-shirt! Prizes are awarded.

Saturday, May 18^th – Maritime Day 2013
Congress first declared Maritime Day in 1933, and the Cape May-Lewes ferry will honor that celebration on Saturday at the Lewes Ferry Terminal with a ceremony at 1pm. Admission is free and includes engine room and bridge tours, maritime displays and more. Food and drink will be available and the event will take place rain or shine.

Saturday, May 18^th – Pooches in the Park
If your four-legged friends are more like family, consider this event which will take place from 1pm-3pm on Saturday at Canalfront Park in Lewes. The event features specialized and pet-friendly vendors, a doggie spa, agility and obedience demos, and more. Admission is $5 per pup, but free for their two-legged friends and owners. One dog per handler and all dogs must be on a non-retractable leash with a maximum length of six feet.

Sunday, May 19^th – Fitness ‘n Fun
Quest Fitness and Kayak is hosting its 2^nd annual “Fitness ‘n Fun from 8am-12pm in Canalfront Park in Lewes on Sunday morning. This event is completely free and open to anyone. The Lewes Historical Society will provide soft drinks, and you can bring your lunch for this month’s discussion on “The Life and Work of a Surfman in the US Life-Saving Service 1870s-1915.” This is the last lunch & learn of the season.

Saturday, 5/11: Dewey Beach Arts Fest
Head to the corner of Dagsworthy Ave and the beach for the second annual Dewey Beach Arts Fest will feature over 60 vendors, crafters and local artists as well as live music, food, activities for kids, a silent auction, and more! Parking and admission are free. Arts Fest runs from 10am-5pm with a magic show at 11:30am and 1:30pm. Rain date is Sunday, May 12^th. For more information check out this link.

Saturday, 5/11: Lewes Fire Department Auxiliary “Fire” and Plant Sale
The Lewes Fire Department Auxiliary is holding its 2^nd annual “fire sale” and Mother’s Day plant sale at Station 1 on Savannah Road from 9am-3pm. In addition to plant there will be a variety of vendors selling gifts, crafts, candles, and more. There will also be refreshments for sale. Saturday, 5/11: Flowering Wonders
Head into Cape Henlopen State Park on Saturday for a class on flowering plants that will celebrate Mother Nature just in time for Mother’s Day! The program is for anyone ages 5 and older. Saturday, May 4^th: Milton Town-Wide Yard Sale

Saturday, May 4^th: Library Book Sale

The Lewes Chamber of Commerce and the British Car Club of Delaware will host the annual Lewes British Motorcar Show on Saturday from 11am-3pm. The show will feature a wide array of interesting and classic British vehicles. Admission is $3 and kids 12 and under are free. To register a car you need the registration form which can be found here, as well as a $15 fee in advance or $25 the day of the show.

Delaware’s annual birding weekend celebrates the spring migration of many species of local birds. With more than 400 species recorded in the Delmarva Peninsula and a variety of environments there are many opportunities for rare sightings. Saturday, April 27^th: Flower & Art Festival
Head down to the East Coast Garden Center (30366 Cordrey Road) in Millsboro for a fun family day including food, face painting, spring plants, local artists, and more! The festival runs from 8am-5pm with a cooking class, “Cooking With Herbs,” at 11am.

This instrumental quartet will present period selections from 17^th and 18^th century composers such as Vivaldi, Corelli, Telemann, Boyce and more. Thursday, April 11^th-Saturday, April 13^th: The Lewes Tulip Festival
This annual event celebrating the Dutch heritage of Lewes takes place all day beginning on Thursday. There will be Trolley Tours for $10 each day at 11:15am and 12:45pm. Additional tours will also be held at 2:45pm on Friday and Saturday. Reservations for the Tulips Trolley Tour can be made by calling the Lewes Chamber of Commerce (302-645-8073). There is also a Tip Toe To The Tulips Map and tickets that will be distributed, and you can enter to win prizes based on your participation. In addition to the tulips there will be several exhibits in and around historic Lewes all weekend long.

Friday, April 12^th: “An American Tapestry” by the Delaware Choral Society
The Delaware Choral Society under the direction of Dr. James Wilson will present a concert featuring music from 20^th Century America, including songs by Leonard Bernstein, Samual Barber, Randall Thompson, and more. The concert will be held at the Holy Cross Catholic Church (631 South State Street) in Dover. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $15 for seniors 65+ and military, and free to anyone under the age of 21. For reservations or information call 302-245-0449.

Saturday, April 13^th: Antiques and Plant Sale
The Lewes Historical Society will host their annual Tulip Festival sale from 10am-4pm at the Rabbit’s Ferry House in the Historical Center Complex (110 Shipcarpenter Street). The sale will feature antiques, collectibles, and local plants and all proceeds will benefit the Lewes Historical Society. For more information call 302-645-7670.

Saturday, April 13^th: Flea Market
The Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park are holding a flea market in the parking lot of the Seaside Nature Center from 9am-3pm on Saturday. In case of rain, the event will be held indoors in the auditorium. If you have items that you would like to donate you can bring them to the auditorium in the Nature Center from 10am-1pm on Friday. Items must be clean and in good condition.

Saturday, April 13^th: Rummage Sale

Saturday, April 6^th – Family Gathering Annual Spring Concert
The Rainbow Chorale will play their annual Spring Concert at the Epworth United Methodist Church (19285 Holland Glade Road) in Rehoboth Beach from 4pm-7pm this weekend. This year will feature music from Elton John, Sister Sledge, Bobby McFerrin, Randy Newman, & Billy Joel. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door and children 12 and under are free.

Saturday, April 6^th-Sunday, April 7^th – Commemoration of the War of 1812
Join the Lewes Historical Society in commemorating the 200^th Anniversary of the War of 1812 with events all weekend long. Events begin Saturday at 12:30 with the Guns of Fort McHenry at Cape Henlopen State Park until 2:30, also from 12:30-5pm there will be special War of 1812 presentations at St. Peter’s Church Hall on Mulberry Street in Lewes. Additionally, the travling exhibit “War of 1812: A Nation Forged By War” will be at the Ellegood House at the Lewes Historical Society Complex (110 Shipcarpenter Street in Lewes) all weekend and through Labor Day. On Sunday, from 10am-3pm the Fort McHenry Guard will be at the Lewes Historical Society Complex (110 Shipcarpenter Street) in Lewes, demonstrating musket drill. Their Fife & Drum Corps will perform as well. There will be events for the whole family at this time, and events will continue throughout the afternoon. Sunday, April 7^th – Beach Bridal Show
If you or someone you know is planning a wedding, head to the Nassau Valley Vineyards (32165 Winery Way) in Lewes for the annual Beach Bridal Show co-hosted by Delaware Today and Delaware Bride Magazine. The show runs from noon-3:30pm and features live entertainment, a wedding trends fashion show, delicious hors d’oeuvres, top of the line wedding professionals, and awesome door prizes.
