Houston, Delaware History - City Information

Just 6 miles from the picturesque city of Milford Delaware is a tiny, remote town with less than 400 residents called Houston. This town was named after Judge John Wallace Houston, (May 1814 – April 1896). Houston graduated from Yale University, held the position of Secretary of State in Delaware in 1841 - 1844 , and was later appointed Associate Judge of the Delaware Superior Court in 1855. Houston is part of the Dover Delaware Metropolitan Statistical area and is 47 miles southwest of Vineland New jersey and 65 miles southeast of Baltimore Maryland. Though this town is small, ( with most of it's residents commuting to other cities for their jobs), it has a wealth of amenities with it's neighboring communities of Milford, Dover and Frederica.

Milford, ( Delaware's 4th largest city) is a quaint and historic community to visit as well as reside in. For Houston's residents and guests alike, this ideal city has much to offer from enticing eateries, cozy coffee houses, antique shops, the River walk, Farmer's Market, book stores, excellent library, museums and magnificent parks and camping grounds. For the connoisseurs of history, Milford has three intriguing museums. The Parson Thorne Mansion, Lydia Ann B. Cannon Museum and the Milford Museum are all historical places well worth touring. A few of the treasures each guest may find there are displays of early shipbuilding tools, theoretical accounts of ships showing Milford's amazing nautical past, silver collections of spoons, coins and many novelties as well. For all the avid nature lovers, there is Abbott's Mill Nature Center where self guided hiking, canoe trails and a 23 acre pond awaits every fan of the outdoors and natural beauty. Close by is the infamous Killen's pond and Water Park. This gorgeous park offers a 66 acre millpond with ample boating and fishing as well as the water park, hosting resort entertainment in a restful, calm, natural setting. This park is open year round and offers cozy cabins and a delightful campground. While enjoying historic Milford, there are many great places to grab a bite to eat. For an evening of home cooked cuisine, a warm, snug ambiance, the Georgia House is the eatery to go to. Each dinner tastes as if it were created right from your grandmother's kitchen, with their savory chicken fried steak, gravy and mashed potatoes, spicy pasta dishes, fresh specialty salads, gourmet soups and delicious bread baskets. For a dining experience that creates that 'feel- good factor' as well as 'soul pampering', The Executive is a romantic and elegant place to dine. Specializing in gourmet pasta dishes, choice beefs, succulent chicken en-trees and yummy breads, this eatery also hosts live entertainment, a cozy bar and a dance floor.

Houston's other neighboring city, Dover, is the capital of the first state of America. It is the second largest city in Delaware founded by William Penn in 1683. Traveling through this metropolitan area, one would think its surroundings to be contemporary with it's chain of restaurants, shops and mall that reflect the 20th century. One only needs to take a detour and travel the back roads to see that the entrancing, historic Dover still exists and is as alluring as ever, beckoning one to go back in time to relive it's colonial and Victorian past. With and abundance of festooned old mansions and estates, historical shops and buildings, this city has a charm that one usually only sees in the movies! For all the history connoisseurs, there are plenty of places to visit in this ideal city. Some of Dover's most famous spots are the Golden Fleece Tavern site, Kent County Courthouse, the Legislative Hall, Mifflin House and the Old State House. There are quaint shops and and pleasant walkways in the historical central square known as The Green, where rallies and other various patriotic events are still held to this day! Another special attraction that Dover has to offer is the spectacular Dover Downs. This alluring casino offers its guests slot machines that play for as little as a penny. For the more seasoned gamblers, there is Video Black Jack , Three Card Poker, Let it Ride and Texas Hold'em. Dover Downs is also the home to exciting and thrilling horse racing as well as Nascar races. For fine dining at the casino, there is the popular Michelle's restaurant and after a superb meal, one can indulge and enjoy a full body massage, facial or pedicure at the Casino's Spa and Salon. Dover also hosts a splendid Opera House that has delightful ballet performances, a symphony orchestra, classic films as well as comedy shows. For superb Italian cuisine, Dover has three great eateries to pamper the palate. The Olive Garden , Roma Italian and Paradiso Restaurant. All three of these places offer spectacular Italian en-trees, savory breads and fresh, crisp salads, accompanied by a great selection of fine wines and tantalizing desserts.

Within less than an hours distance, Houston's residents and guests alike are privy to the wonderful and renown resort beach cities of Rehoboth and Lewes. These two cities combined offer every amenity that one could desire. There is abundant shopping with the Tanger Outlets, (over 130 name brand outlets, all purchases tax free), downtown boutiques, an excellent public library, 5 star restaurants, cozy coffee pubs, fitness centers, water park, award winning winery, great schools, high class golf courses, historic sites, great parks, museums and intriguing old lighthouses.

Whether one is looking for a a small town to relocate to that is close to the beach, or a place to visit on a weekend afternoon, Houston Delaware is a lovely town to stop in and see. 

Houston Delaware's extraordinary qualities rate high on most people's wish list. With no state sales tax, no personal property tax, and one of the lowest property tax rates in the nation, it certainly has its advantages to residents. Consider the fact in Delaware, you've got lower housing costs than most of the people in the nation.
